PREDICTION SET 2 EXAMINATION
Time: 2 ½ Hours
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Write your name and index number in the spaces provided above.
Answer ALL the questions in the spaces provided in the question paper.
Marks are given for a clear record of the observations actually made, their suitability, accuracy
and the use made of them.
Candidates are advised to record their observations as soon as they are made.
You are supposed to spend the first 15 minutes of the 2 ½ hours allowed for this paper reading
the whole paper carefully before commencing your work.
Mathematical tables and calculators may be used.

b) (i) Adjust the positions of the thread such that one is at the 10cm mark and the other at
the 90cm mark so that the distance marked d is 80cm. Maintain the threads vertical by
moving the loops on the plank.
(ii) Now displace one end of the metre rule slightly on a horizontal plane so that when
released it oscillates about a vertical axis as in the figure below.
(iii) Measure the time for 10 oscillations and record the value in the table provide
below.

c) (i) Repeat the procedure in (b) above for the values of d shown in the table (Set the values of d
by adjusting the positions of the loops in steps of 5cm on both sides)
(ii) Complete the table. (9 mks)
(iii) Given that T2 = where K is a constant. Use the graph to determine the value of
K. (3 mks)
2. (a)You are provided with the following
A test tube
A copper wire 1m long SWG
Half metre rule
Wooden pegs for clamping
A stand and clamp
A vernier calipers
5 pieces of 20 g masses
Proceed as follows:
Wound the copper wire round the test tube and ensure the wounds are as close as
possible.
Remove the wire from the test –tube without altering the shape of spring formed.
Open the wire at the ends to enable you set the hooks as shown.
(b) (i) Count the number (N) of complete turns of the spring N ………….…………….. (1mk)
(ii) Measure the outer diameter D of the spring using the vernier calipers and record the
values in metres. D= ………………………………… (1mk)
(c) (i) Arrange the apparatus as shown in the diagram below.
(ii) Record the initials reading on the ruler LO when no load is hung on the spring
LO =……………………………………………………………. (1mk)
(iii) Measure and record the diameter d of the wire used in meters
d =……………………………………………………………. m (1mk)
(d) Now hung a 20g mass on the spring and record the reading. Repeat this for masses of 40,
60, 80 and 100g and record the corresponding values of L and complete the table below.
