Question 1 - Building Construction and Fire Resistance

a) Describe the factors that affect the stability of a brick load bearing wall when
involved in fire.

b) Describe the structure of sandwich panels and explain the hazards presented by
sandwich panels in a fire.

Question 2 – Building Materials and Systems and Fire Resistance

a) Plastics are used in a variety of construction materials, finishes and furnishings.


Describe the factors that affect the performance of plastics in fire.

b) In relation to building construction, explain the term “sacrificial timber” and describe
how this provides protection in a fire.

a) One of the categories of design for sprinkler heads is the glass bulb type. Describe
how glass bulb sprinkler heads operate.

b) Describe the operation and effects of a water mist system and give one example
of a situation where this type of system might be used.
