Introduction.
Electricity is produced in power
station using turbans and generators.

Based on the electric output of the

generator they are classified into two
types AC generator and DC generator.

In this project we will study about AC

generator, it's parts functions, working
and advantages.
AC generator

AC generator is a machine that

convert mechanical energy into
electrical energy. The easy generator
input supply is mechanical energy
supplied by steam turbines, gas
turbine and combustion engines. The
output is alternating electrical power
in the form of alternating voltage and
current.
Principle of AC
generator.
It is based on the principle of
electromagnetic induction whenever
amount of magnetic flux linked with a
coil changes, an EMF was introduced
in the coil. The direction of the current
induced is given by the Fleming's right
hand rule.
AC generator work on the principle of
Paradise law of electromagnetic
induction, which state that
electromotive force EMF or voltage is
generated in current carrying
conductor that cut a uniform
magnetic field. This can either be
achieved by rotating a conducting coil
and static magnetic field or rotating
the magnetic field containing the
stationary conductor. The preferred
arrangement is to keep the coil
stationary because it is easier to draw
induced alternating current from
stationary armature call that form
rotating coil.
The generated EMF depend on the
number of armature coil turns,
magnetic field strength, and the
speed of the rotating field.
AC generator part
and functions
The various parts of AC generator are:
• Field
• Armature
• Prime mover
• Rotor
• Stator
• Slip rings
FIELD.
The field consists of coil of conducted
that receive a voltage from in the
source and produce magnetic flux.
The magnetic flux in the field cut the
armature to produce a voltage of the
AC generator.

ARMATURE.
The part of an AC generator in which
the voltage is produced is known as
armature. This component primarily
consists of coil of large enough to
carry the full load current of the
generator.
PRIME MOVER.
The component used to drive the AC
generator is known as prime mover.
The prime mover could either be a
diesel engine, a steam turbine for a
motor.

ROTOR.
The rotating component of the
generator is known as the rotor. The
generators prime movers drives the
rotor.
STATOR.
The stator is a stationary part of an
Asian generator. The stator core
comprises limitation of Steel alloy or
magnetic iron to minimise the Eddy
current loss.

SLIP RINGS.
Slip ring r electrical connection used
to transfer power to and fro from the
rotor of an AC generator. They are
typically designed to connect the flow
of current from a stationary device to
a rotating one.
Working of a
generator
When the armature rotates between
the pole of the magnet upon an
access perpendicular to the magnetic
field, the flux linkage of the armature
changes continuously. As a result, an
electric current flow through the
galvanometer and the slip ring and
brushes full stop the galvanometer
swing between positive and the
negative values full stop indicates
that there is an alternating current
flowing through the galvanometer. The
direction of the induced current can
be identified using Fleming right hand
rule.

instantaneous EMF
production.

makes angle with vertical. SW is
uniform angular speed of the coil
Then = .
“B” be the strength of magnetic field
“n” be the number of turn in the coil
and “A” be the area of the coil then
magnetic flux with the coil in this

Advantages of AC
generator.
• AC generator can be easily stepped
up down through transformer.
• The transmission link size in a
generator is thinner because of the
step up feature.
• Los in AC generator relatively less.
• The size of his generator is small
which make it convenient.
• Aircraft auxiliary power generation,
wind generator, High Speed gas
turbine generators.
• All of our household appliances
run on AC current.
