Phonics evaluation and assessment

Assessing the children’s letter–sound understanding will allow you to plan for revision or
extension activities in subsequent phonic sessions. Mouse and Me! provides an assessment
grid that enables you to check a child’s ability to see a grapheme and say the corresponding
sound, as well as identify the correct grapheme based on the sound they hear.
Find a comfortable and relatively quiet space and sit down with each individual child. Point
to a grapheme on the evaluation grid (these are available to you in either capital, lower case
or cursive letters) and ask the child to say the sound. Add ticks to the first column according
to the child’s responses. Then using the same evaluation grid, cover all the graphemes except
the first row. Say a sound from the first row and ask the child to identify which grapheme
has that sound. Repeat with the other rows, adding ticks to the second column on the
assessment grid.
