Module 1 – CommCell Console
1-1 Access the CommCell Console
1. Open CV Prof – CSProd and login
a. Username: admin
b. Password: Commvault1
2. In the taskbar, launch the CommCell Console , or use Start Menu > Commvault > CommCell Console
Hint: Hover over the icons and the title of the function will pop up
3. In the Connect to CommCell window, login using the following credentials:
a. User Name or Email: admin
b. Password: Commvault1!
c. CommCell: CSProd.cv.lab (default selection)
d. Click OK

CommCell Console Tabs
1. In the Home tab, click through the icons to explore their options
Note: A web browser will open when selecting Web Console, Command Center, Health Status, and SLA Status
2. Repeat with the other tabs to gain familiarity with the various settings and functions
Note the placement of the CommCell Browser Panel and Browser Summary Window
1. In the CommCell Browser panel > Client Computers > CSProd > File System > defaultbackupset
a. As each level expands, the contents from that level are displayed in the Browser Summary window
Note: Subclients are only viewed in the Browser Summary window
2. At the bottom of the CommCell Browser panel, click the Agents view to change display; the new panel displays
containers by agent type, followed by installed servers
3. Return to the original view by clicking in the CommCell Browser at the bottom; this is the system default view

Content/Summary Window
1. In the CommCell Browser panel, click the name of your CommServe server and Commcell at the top of the list;
in this lab the name is csprod
2. In the Browser Summary window, notice that the csprod tab is highlighted, and the contents match the list in the
CommCell Browser panel
3. In the CommCell Browser panel, select Client Computers and notice that the Browser Summary window
adjusts to match the content of the panel
4. At the bottom left of the Browser Summary window, click the Summary View tab to see a general overview of
clients in the CommCell
Note: At the top of the window under the tab are links to each level of the path you have selected; click the CommCell
name (Csprod) to return to this point.

Event Viewer Window
1. In the Browser Summary window, click the Event Viewer tab
2. Review entries on Focused Events tab, and click the All Events tab to view all available events
a. Right-click anywhere in the All Events tab > Search Events to open the Events Selection Window
i. Select the button for Create a search query
ii. Select the Severity tab
1) Information: uncheck
2) Minor: uncheck
3) Major: uncheck
4) Critical: check the box
b. Check the box for Save this search query as and name it Critical Events
3. Click OK to save and run the query
4. In the popup window, view the listed events, then click Close to close the window and return to the Event tab
5. To run the query, right-click anywhere in the window and select Search Events, then select the query name from
the dropdown menu
6. In the top right of the Focused Events tab, navigate to Focused Events in the Last, and click the up and down
arrows to adjust the number of days/hours of events displayed

Lab 1-3 Customizing the CommCell Console
Use the Pin Function
1. In the CommCell Browser panel, click Minimize Pin at the top of the window to hide the CommCell Browser
panel
2. Hover over the minimized CommCell Browser panel to expand the screen, then click Restore Pin to re-pin the
CommCell Browser panel
3. Try this with in the Browser Summary window for additional options
1. In the top right of the Job Controller tab click Float to break the tab out of the group and view it as a stand-
alone window
2. Click Unfloat to return the floated window to a tab, and note that it might be in a different position; click and
drag the tab to the desired position
3. This function works on all tabs in the Browser Summary window
1. In the top right of the Job Controller tab, click Maximize to expand the tab to full screen
3. Add a field by clicking the double arrow > Choose columns and select the additional fields to display or
delete; click away from the selection box to close it
4. Click and drag a column to change its location

1. CommCell Browser panel > Client Computers > csprod > File System agent > defaultbackupset

a. Right-click the Mission Critical subclient > Backup to open the Backup Options for Subclient Mission

i. Select Backup Type: Full

b. Click OK to start the backup job
2. In the Job Controller tab, right-click the Mission Critical backup job > Detail… to view open the Backup Job
Details window, then click through the tabs to review the details

Set Event Log Retention
1. CommCell Console ribbon > Tools tab > User Preferences to open the User Preferences window and select
the Event Filter tab
a. Uncheck the box for Use Global Settings
i. Maximum number of events in Event Viewer: 300
ii. Maximum number of days in Event Viewer: 5
iii. Note: This will set the total number of viewed events from the event log to 300 events or 5 days of
events
iv. Click OK to save the event log retention settings

Lab 1-4 CommServe Server Post-Installation Tasks
Configure the Software Cache
1. CommCell Console ribbon > Tools tab > Add/Remove Software > Software Cache Configuration to open
the Software Cache Configuration window
2. In the CommServe Software Cache tab, note the current location of the software cache; the cache folder can be
moved by changing the cache location and copying the contents to the new location
Note: If you move and manually copy the software cache contents you must perform a “Commit Cache” operation
before the cache can be used for push install
3. Click Cache Details to view the current contents, then click OK to close window

Populate the Local and Remote Software Caches
1. CommCell Console ribbon > Tools tab > Add/Remove Software > Copy Software to open the Copy Software
Options window and select the General tab
a. Click Browse and navigate to T:\ > CPR2022E, then click OK, which will return you to the Copy Software
Options window
2. Select the Options tab
a. Job Type: Copy and Sync
b. Check the box for MediaAgent1
c. Click OK to start the copy task
3. Click the Job Controller tab to view the download progress
Install Updates
1. CommCell Browser panel > Client Computer Groups > right-click Infrastructure > All Tasks > Add/Remove
Software > Upgrade Software to open the Upgrade Software Options window
a. Install Maintenance Release Only: check the box, then click OK
2. Click the Job Controller tab to view the installation progress, then right-click the update job > Detail... to open
the Upgrade Software Job Details window
a. Click the Client Status tab to view details, then click OK to close the window
Note: In this lab, the hotfix install will complete successfully with the status “Already updated” because we
have not actually downloaded any new hotfix packs. Also, some of the clients that are currently offline
may show as “failed to update.”

Enable Private Metrics Reporting
1. CommCell Console ribbon > Home tab > Control Panel > Monitoring section > Remote Private Metrics
Reporting to open the Remote Private Metrics Reporting window, then select the General tab
a. CommCell diagnostics and Usage: Check the box
i. Health Check, Activity, and Audit: Check the boxes
b. Chargeback: (do not change; only Monthly is checked)
c. Metrics Server URL: http://CSProd.cv.lab:80/
d. Click Upload Now to upload metrics information
i. If prompted, click Yes to save changes and upload now
2. Click OK to exit the window
3. Monitoring section > Private Metrics Reporting
Note: The last collection and upload times may take a few minutes to populate.
a. Click OK to save the configuration and close the window
4. Close the Control Panel window

Lab 1-5 CommServe Server Maintenance
Run DB Maintenance Utility from the Command Line
1. CSProd virtual machine > Windows icon > Windows System > right-click Command Prompt > More >
Run as administrator to open the Command Prompt window
a. To view maintenance options, type DBMaintenance then press ENTER
b. To run the DBMaintenance function with the recommended settings, type
DBMaintenance -recommended and view the information on consistency check, as well as index
reorganization and defragmentation
c. Close the Command Prompt window

Recover the CommServe Server Database
1. CommCell Browser panel > right-click the CommCell csprod > All Tasks > Disaster Recovery Backup to
open the Disaster Recovery Options window, then select the General tab
a. Click the button for Full
b. Leave the defaults for other settings and click OK to start the DR backup
2. Click the Job Controller tab to monitor the DR backup job
Note: Wait for this job to complete before continuing.
3. To copy the DR backup to local CommServe server folder, open Windows File Explorer (folder icon in
taskbar) > \\MediaAgent1\CSDR
a. Select to the most recent SET_xxx folder (the date/time of the job you just ran) and copy the folder to
This PC\Documents (on CSProd)
4. To restore CommServe Server database with the CSRecoveryAssistant, open Windows File Explorer >
C:\Program Files > Commvault > ContentStore\Base
a. Right-click CSRecoveryAssistant.exe > Run as administrator
b. In the CommServe Recovery Assistant window, select Recovery/Production and click Next
c. Type Original Commserve is gone. This machine will take over as production Commserve and click
Next
5. To enter the database dump folder, click Browse > This PC > Documents > Set_xxx
6. Click OK to select folder, then click Next to continue
7. View the database files and log files paths and note that the default paths will be used, then click Next
8. View the summary of options selected and click Start Recovery; this will take several minutes to run through the
recovery process
9. Once the recovery is complete (All green checks) click Next
10. License file is not needed for post recovery, then click Next
11. In the CommServe recovery completed successfully!! Window, click Finish to complete the recovery
12. From the Windows Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, click the Process Manager Icon to open the
Commvault Process Manager > Services Tab

Lab 1-6 MediaAgent Installation
Install MediaAgent Software
1. Launch the HYPERV1 virtual machine
2. Return to the CSPROD virtual machine
3. CommCell Console > CommCell Console ribbon > Tools tab > Add/Remove Software > Install Software
a. In the Install wizard opening screen, click Next
b. Select the computer’s operating system: Windows, then click Next
c. Select how to discover the computers for installing the software: Manually select computers, then click
Next
d. Enter the hostnames of the computer: click the white text-entry box (<Please Type Here>) and type
Hyperv1.cv.lab, then click Next
e. Select Software Cache: do not change default selections, then click Next
f. Enter Account Information
i. User Name: cv\student
ii. Password: student
iii. Confirm Password: student
iv. Click Next to continue
g. Select Package(s) to Install: check the box for Server > MediaAgent, then click Next
Note: this auto-populates Microsoft Windows > VSS Provider
h. Enter Recommended Settings for the selected Software: do not change the default settings, then click
Next
i. Enter Additional Install Options: do not change the default settings, then click Next
j. Optional Settings: Check the box for Reboot (if required), review the additional options, then click Next
k. In the popup window type Change control for reboot confirmed then click OK
l. Network Route Configuration: do not change the default settings, then click Next
m. Please Select When To Run The Job: Immediate, then click Next
n. Summary: review the selected installation options, then click Finish to start the installation
4. Click the Job Controller tab to monitor the installation progress

Configure the Index Directory
1. To change the index directory location, CommCell Browser panel > Storage Resources > MediaAgents >
right-click Hyperv1 > Properties to open the MediaAgent Properties for hyperv1 window
a. Catalog tab > Browse to open the Browse for Index Cache directory window
i. Select the E:\ drive
ii. To create a new location, click New Folder… at the bottom of the window to open the Create
new folder window
1) Type IndexCache, then click OK to accept the entry
iii. In the left panel, expand Drive E: to see that new location is displayed and click OK
b. In the Browse for Index Cache directory window, click Index Directory Browse and navigate to select
E:\IndexCache
Note: After changing the index location, the system will copy the index to the new location. You will see it
run as a job in the Job controller.

Lab 1-7 Agent Installation
Install an Agent on a Client Using Interactive Installation
1. Verify that the HYPERV1 virtual machine is running
2. Login to the HyperV1 virtual machine using the following credentials:
a. User Name: cv\administrator (default)
b. Password: Commvault1
3. On the Commvault server, click the Windows Icon > File Explorer > \\CSProd\CPR2022E\
4. If required, enter the following credentials:
a. Username: cv\administrator
b. Password: Commvault1
5. Open the subfolder Winx64 > right-click Setup.exe > Run as Administrator
6. In the Commvault Setup wizard, click the default option for English and click > to continue
7. Check box for “I Agree” to accept terms in the license agreement and click > to continue
8. In the Choose the Installation type window, accept the default of Install packages on this computer and
click > to continue
9. From the Install Option window, select the Add Packages and click > to continue
10. From the Select Packages window, select Virtualization on the left of the screen and check the box next to
Virtual Server, then click > to continue
11. Review settings in the Installation Summary window, then click > to begin the installation
12. When the install is completed, click Finish in the Success window

Lab 1-8 Encryption
Enable Inline Encryption for Client
1. CommCell Browser panel > Client Computers > right-click csprod > Properties to open the Client Computer
Properties for csprod window, then click Advanced at the bottom of the window and select the Encryption tab
a. Encrypt data with the following settings: click the button
i. Cipher: AES (Rijndael)
ii. Key Length: 256
b. Direct Media Access (External Restore Tools): Via Media Password
c. Click OK to save encryption settings and close the window
2. Click OK to close the Properties window

Create a Copyset to Enable Offline (Copy-Based) Encryption
1. CommCell Browser panel > Policies > Storage Policies > right-click Basic Disk (MA) >
All Tasks > Create New Copy to open the wizard
a. Copy Details
i. Copy Name: Daily Offsite Copy
ii. Storage Pool: Add > Disk
1) Storage pool name: Daily Offsite DASH Pool, then click Next
b. Configure Storage
i. Create Local: click the button and select mediaagent1
1) Path: Click Browse and select Drive G, then click New Folder… at the bottom of the
window
2) Type the name DASHpoolVol-1
3) Highlight the new folder DASHpoolVol-1, then click OK to close
4) Click OK to close the window
ii. Click Next to continue
c. Enable Deduplication on Storage Pool: Enable Deduplication (check the box) and enter the following:
i. Number of Partitions: 1
ii. Choose Path Partition column: 1
iii. MediaAgent and Partition Path column: click Choose Path… to open the Partition Path window
1) In the MediaAgent dropdown menu select MediaAgent1
2) Partition Path: Click Browse and select Drive F: then click New Folder… at the bottom of
the window and name it DASHpoolDDB and click OK
3) Click Drive F: and select new folder DASHpoolDDB, then click OK to close
iv. Click OK to create the Partition Path window
v. Click Next to close the window
d. Advanced settings for the primary copy
i. Software Encryption: check the box
1) Cipher: In the dropdown menu select Blowfish
2) Key length: In the dropdown menu select 128
ii. Click Finish to create the new Storage Pool
2. In the Create New Storage Policy Copy window > Copy Details window
a. Storage Pool: select Daily Offsite DASH Pool from the dropdown menu and click Next
3. In the Retention Rules window, leave the default retention 30 days and 1 cycle, then click Next
4. In the Copy Policy window, deselect All backups and leave the default for Backups on and After (today’s date)
a. Click Finish to create the encrypted secondary copy

Configure Hardware Encryption
1. CommCell Browser panel > Policies > Storage Policies > right-click Basic Disk (MA) >
All Tasks > Create New Copy to open the Create New Storage Policy Copy wizard
a. Copy Details > Copy Name type Monthly Tape Copy
i. Storage Pools: Add > Tape to open the Create Tape Storage Pool wizard
1) Enter the storage pool name: type Monthly Offsite Tape Pool and click Next
2) Configure Storage name: Commvault Scalar i6000 x
3) Select the default MediaAgent MediaAgent1
4) Select the default drive pool DrivePool(MediaAgent1)x, then click Next
5) Scratch Pool: Default Scratch, then click Next
6) Enter the streams and retention criteria
a) Number of Device Streams: 6
b) Primary Copy’s Aging Rules: 30 Days, 1 Cycle
7) Advanced Settings
a) Hardware Compression: check the box (default selection)
b) Encryption Settings: check the box
i.) Hardware Encryption: select the button, then click Next
8) Review Selections and click Finish to complete new tape storage pool
ii. In the Copy Details window, select Monthly Offsite Tape Pool from the dropdown menu and
click Next
iii. In the Retention Rules window, leave the default settings and click Next to continue
iv. In the Copy Policy window, select the following details:
v. Selective Copy: Monthly Fulls (default selection)
vi. For each time period copy the: Last Full
vii. Backup Selection: uncheck the box and accept the date
viii. Leave all other setting as default
ix. Click Finish to create the secondary copy with hardware encryption

Set a Media Password for the Storage Policy
1. CommCell Browser panel > Policies > Storage Policies > right-click Basic Disk (MA) > Properties to open
the Storage Policy Properties: Basic Disk (MA) window, then click the Advanced tab
a. Enable Storage Policy Level Media Password: check the box
b. Change Media Password: check the box
c. Enter New Media Password: Student!23
d. Confirm New Media Password: Student!23
e. Enter Old Media Password: (leave blank)
f. Click OK to set the password on the storage policy and override the CommCell level password for this
policy

Review Mount Path Usage
1. CommCell Browser panel > Storage Resources > Libraries > right-click Basic Disk (MA1) > Properties to
open the Library Properties for Basic Disk (MA1) window, then click the Mount Paths tab
a. Review the default setting Spill and fill mount paths

Lab 2-2 Configure Storage with Deduplication Partitions
Add Disk Storage Pool
1. Access the CSPROD virtual machine and login to the CommCell Console
2. In the CommCell Browser panel, click + to expand Storage Resources > right-click the Storage Pools
container > Add Storage Pool > Disk
3. In the Create New Storage Pool wizard, select or enter the following information, and click Next after each section
4. In the Enter the storage pool name window:
a. Storage Pool Name: 20TB NAS
b. Configure Storage:
i. Path: Click Create Network
ii. In the Add Network Storage window
1) MediaAgent: in the dropdown menu select MediaAgent1
2) In the dropdown menu select Credential
3) In the dropdown menu select Create New and enter the following information:
a) Credential name: Network Share Access
b) User Name: cv\student
c) Password: student
d) Description: Account for shared storage access
e) Click OK to create the user credential
4) Type the folder name: \\MediaAgent1\Vol1
5) Click OK to add new storage location and return to the wizard
c. Now that 20TB NAS is selected for storage, click Next to continue

5. Enable Deduplication on Storage Pool: Check Enable Deduplication Box (Default) and enter the following:
a. Number of Partitions: 2
i. Click Choose Path (Partition 1)
1) MediaAgent: MediaAgent1
2) Click Browse for Partition Path and highlight drive G:
3) Click New folder
4) Enter the folder name GlobalDDB-P1 then click OK
5) Highlight the folder GlobalDDB-P1, click OK to close window, then click OK in the
Partition Path window to set the path for Partition 1
ii. Click Choose Path (Partition 2)
1) MediaAgent: CSPROD
2) Click Browse for Partition Path and highlight drive S:
3) Click New folder
4) Enter the folder name GlobalDDB-P2 then click OK
5) Highlight the folder GlobalDDB-P2, then click OK to close window, then click OK in the
Partition Path window to set the path for Partition 2
b. Click Next to continue with the wizard
6. Software Encryption: keep the default settings and click Next to continue
7. Review the selections and click Finish to create the new Storage Pool

Lab 2-3 Sharing a Tape Library
Share a Tape Library
1. CommCell Console ribbon > Storage tab > Expert Storage Configuration to open the Expert Storage
Configuration (CommServe Host: csprod) window and the Select MediaAgents window
a. In the Select MediaAgents window, select csprod and mediaagent1
Hint: Use the Ctrl key for multiple selections
b. Click Add>>, then click OK to close the window
2. In the Expert Storage Configuration window, click Start (lower left) > Detect/Configure Devices… to open the
Detect Library window
a. Automatically Create DDS Drivepools: check the box
b. Leve all other Device Type settings as defaults
c. Click OK to scan for devices
i. When the scan completes, click OK to close the window
d. Expand the Log window and note that the library scanned the same drives connected to all selected
MediaAgents (Dynamic Shared Library); click Close to close the Log window
3. In the Expert Storage Configuration window > Libraries tab > right-click the CommVault Scalar i6000 x >
Configure to open the Configuration window
a. Library and all drives: select the button
b. Click OK to configure the library
4. Click Start > Exit close the Expert Storage Configuration tool
5. CommCell Browser panel > Storage Resources > Libraries; the newly configured library (Commvault Scalar
i6000 x) will appear as available

b. New Outside Storage Location: check the box
c. Location: Type DataCenter Storage
d. Click OK to set the location and move the tape to the I/E port (Mail Slot);
i. Read the Export Media message and click OK to continue
2. In the library navigation, select the I/E Ports to see that the tape CVLT02WW will be in one of the slots ready to
be removed from the library
