A. Study the following sequences and provide what is needed.

1. 34, 36, 38, 40, --- the next three terms are 42, 44, 46, the sequence increases by 2.

2. In 3, 6, 8, 11, 13, 16, 18, 21, the next 4 terms are 23, 26, 28, 31; the sequence increases by 3,
then 2.

3. Today is Saturday, 100 days from today, the day is Monday, since 100/7 = 14 weeks plus 2
remaining days. [If today is Saturday, every 7th day is Saturday. 100/7 = 14 with remainder 2. The
98th day is Saturday. Two days will give Monday.]

4. The pattern of meetings is April 17, May 14, June 12. April 17 to May 14 is 28 days; May 14 to
June 12 is 29 days. The meeting could be on July 10 or 11.

5. If there are 5 rows, each row has two more books than the one before it and the last row has 24
books, then the rows have 24, 22, 20, 18 and 16 books. In all, there are 100 books on display.

B. Answer the following.

1. In the sequence 2, 1, 5, 7, 4, 1, 3, 3, 4, two sets of consecutive digits, sum up to11. These are 7 +
4 = 11; 4 + 1 + 3 + 3 = 11. Note that such sets may overlap. In the sequence: 7, 4, 3, 4, 2, 5, 6, 3, 1,
how many sets of consecutive digits sum up to 11? These are 7 + 4 = 11, 4 + 3 + 4 = 11, 5 + 6 = 11,
4 + 2 + 5 = 11, 5 + 6 = 11

2. What is the 200th letter of ABRACADABRAABRACACADRA… ABRACADABRA contains 11 letters.

200/11 = 18.1818… or 18 times + .18 x 11 = 1.98. Also, 18 x 11 = 198 which means the 200th
letter is B.

C. Translate each of the following phrases into mathematical expressions. Use x, y or z.

1. 12 added to a number  x + 12
2. twice a number subtracted from 21  21 – 2y
3. the difference between a number and 7  y – 7
4. twice the sum of a number and 8  2(x + 8)
5. half a number increased by 8  x/2 + 8
6. 12 less than thrice a number  3y – 12
7. The sum of thrice a number and 10  3z + 10 = 28
8. The product of 6 times the sum of a number and 7  7(6x)
9. 5 less than the product of 7 times a number  7y – 5
10. The quotient of thrice a number and 5  3z/5
11. A number added to 21 gives 35 – 21 + x  35
12. The product of 14 and a number is 42  14y = 42
13. Twice the sum of a number & 11 is 25  2(z+11) = 25
14. Five times a number minus 7 is 28  5x – 7 = 28

D. Solve each of the following equations.

1. 3x – 5 = 7  3x = 12; x = 4 7. 9 – 4x = 1  4x = 8, x = 2
2. 2x + 3 = 15  2x = 12; x = 6 8. 6 + 5x = 21  5x = 15, x = 3
3. 8 – 3x = 20  8 – 20 = 3x; 3x = – 12; x = –4 9. 5x – 3 = 12  5x = 15, x = 3
4. 8 + 3x = 23  3x = 15, x = 5 10. 10 – 3x = 4  3x = 6, x = 2
5. x = 4  x = 20 11. 6x + 3 = 15  6x = 12, x = 2
5
6. 17 + 3x = 23  3x = 6, x = 2 12. 2x = 4  2x = 20, x = 10
7 2

E. Solve the following problems.

1. Rose paid 6 x ₱18.50 = ₱111.00 for 6 handkerchiefs.

2. An elevator cab is 1.8 m x 1.5 m = 2.7 sq. m. If 8 people can stand on a square meter of carpet,
8 x 2.7 = approximately 21 people can stand in the elevator cab.

3. If 7 boys like to eat apples and 12 like to eat pears, then (7 + 12) – 14 = 5 boys like to eat both
apples and pears since there are only 14 boys.

4. A cube of side 1 m was divided into cubes of side 1 dm. The number of small cubes that resulted
was 1000. The surface area of each small cube is 6 sq. dm. Hence, their total surface area is 6000
sq. dm. (Note: 1 m3 = (10 dm)3 = 1000 dm3)

5. If a book is opened and the product of the page numbers is 2352, get the square root of 2352. It
will not be exact. The whole number will be an even number. That is the left hand page and the
odd number after it is the right hand page. In this case, the two page numbers are 48 and 49.

6. In the morning, there were 7 more girls than boys in a special class. In the afternoon, 12 boys and
3 girls joined the class. If there were x boys in the morning, there were x + 7 girls. In the
afternoon, there were x + 12 boys and x + 7 +3 = x + 10 girls. There were 2 more boys than girls
then.

7. The ratio of the short side to the long side of the book is 12:15. If the short side becomes 30 cm,
then the ratio becomes 12:15 = 30:x. 12 x = 15(30). x = 15(30)/12. x = 75/2 = 37.5 cm, the
enlarged longer side.

Challenge!

1. The perimeter of the rectangular piece of cardboard is 54 cm. Half the perimeter is 27 cm. Since
the length of the cardboard is twice the width, l + w = 2w + w = 3w = 27 cm. w = 9 cm and l = 18
cm. The area of the cardboard is 9 x 18 sq. cm = 162 sq. cm.

2. Let x be the number of Math Club members, y, the number of Science Club members. x:y = 4:5.
5x = 4y. x + 10 = y – 10. y = x + 20. 5x = 4(x + 20) = 4x + 80. x = 80 the number of Math Club
members; y = 80 + 20 = 100 the number of Science Club members.

3. In five days, James sold (75 + 50 + 64 + 78 + 134) = 401. He had 1200 – 401 = 799. 799/1200 =
0.6658 or 0.666. James had 66.6% of his books still unsold.

4. Let Px be the price of the lipstick, Px/2, the price of the shampoo. After buying this two, Mary
had ₱500 – (1.5x) left. One half of this is ₱250 – 0.75x which she spent. In all, she spent P1.5x +
₱250 – 0.75 x = ₱250 + 0.75x. She had left ₱500 – (₱250 + 0.75x) = ₱250 – 0.75x = 100,
0.75x = 150, x = ₱200. The shampoo cost ₱200/2 = ₱100.
