RESPIRATION IN ORGANISMS – PIE WORKSHEET ANSWER KEY

Preliminary

1. Which of the following best describes the purpose of cellular respiration?

a. to provide energy for cell activities
b. to produce sugar for storage in cells
c. to release oxygen for breathing
d. to supply carbon dioxide for photosynthesis
Ans:
a. to provide energy for cell activities

2. Why do we often sneeze when we inhale a lot of dust-laden air?

Ans:
We often sneeze when we inhale a lot of dust-laden air to expel out these foreign
particles. These particles get past the hair in the nasal cavity and irritate the lining of
the cavity which results in sneezing.

3. During exhalation, the ribs

a. move outwards
b. move downwards
c. move upwards
d. do not move at all
Ans:
b. move downwards

4. Mark T if the statement is true and F if it is false:

(i) During heavy exercise the breathing rate of a person slows down. (T/ F)
(ii) Plants carry out photosynthesis only during the day and respiration only at night.
(T/ F)
(iii) Frogs breathe through their skins as well as their lungs. (T/ F)
(iv) The fishes have lungs for respiration. (T/ F)
(v) The size of the chest cavity increases during inhalation. (T/ F)
Ans:
(i) F
(ii) F
(iii) T
(iv) F
(v) T

5. Why does an athlete breathe faster and deeper than usual after finishing the race?
Ans:
During the run, the demand of energy is high but the supply of oxygen to produce
energy is limited. Therefore, anaerobic respiration takes places in the muscle cells to
fulfill the demand of energy. After finishing the race, an athlete breathe faster and
deeper than usual so that more oxygen is supplied to the cells.

6. Why do we get muscle cramps after heavy exercise?

Ans:
Muscle cramps after heavy exercise occur due to the buildup of a substance called
lactic acid in the muscles. During intense exercise, our muscles sometimes don’t get
enough oxygen to produce energy through the usual process (aerobic respiration).
Instead, they switch to anaerobic respiration, which doesn’t require oxygen but
produces lactic acid as a byproduct. The accumulation of lactic acid leads to soreness,
stiffness, and cramps in the muscles. Once the exercise is over and we rest, oxygen
helps break down the lactic acid, and the cramps gradually go away.

7. Take three test-tubes. Fill each of them with water. Label them A, B and C. Keep a
snail in test-tube A, a water plant in test-tube B and in C, keep snail and plant both.
Which test-tube would have the highest concentration of CO2?
Ans:
Test-tube A will have the highest concentration of CO2 because snail will take in
oxygen and gives out CO2. In test-tubes B and C, the CO2 will be utilized by the
water plant for synthesizing food and hence there will be less concentration of CO2 in
these.

8. Sometimes we see that farmers loosen the soil. What is the reason behind it?
Ans:
The farmers sometimes loosen the soil. This helps the root to respire through the air
present in the space between soil particles.

9. Whales and dolphins are seen many times releasing a fountain of water sometimes at
the surface of water. Why do they do so?
Ans:
Whales and dolphins are mammals, which means they need to breathe air to live.
They come up to the surface of the water to take a breath. When they exhale, they
blow out air through their blowholes, which are like their noses, on top of their heads.
This air comes out with a lot of force, and any water above the blowhole is pushed up,
making a fountain or spout of water. This helps clear the blowhole so they can take in
fresh air before diving back down.

10. a. Without a specialized respiratory system, how do plants perform respiration?

Explain.
b. Since plant roots are underground, by what mechanism do they respire?
Ans:
a. Plants do not have a specialized respiratory system; instead, they carry out
respiration through a process of gas exchange that takes place across their
surfaces. Oxygen diffuses directly into the cells from the air spaces within the
plant tissues, and carbon dioxide produced as a waste product diffuses out. This
exchange happens mainly through the stomata in leaves and the lenticels in stems.

b. Plant roots, being underground, respire by absorbing oxygen directly from the air
spaces within the soil. This oxygen diffuses into the root cells, where it is used for
cellular respiration.

11. It is not wise to sleep under a tree during night. Why?

Ans:
During day, plants photosynthesize in the presence of sunlight and uses CO2 produced
during respiration. During this process O2 is released as a byproduct and a balance
between O2 and CO2 is maintained in the atmosphere.

12. Observe the given figures as A and B and answer the following questions.

a. Among both figures identify which A or B indicates the process of inhalation and
which shows the process of exhalation?
b. In the figure label the arrows and indicate the direction of

• movement of air
• movement of diaphragm
• movement of ribs
