“Basic Aerodynamics Lab”

“Report 5”

➢ Introduction:
In this lab report, we are going to discuss the characteristics of flow over a aerofoil
NACA 0012 aerofoil. We will use ANSYS workbench 15 for this experiment. We will create a
NACA 0012 aerofoil profile and mesh it using some velocity parameter.

➢ Problem Statement:
Study the characteristics flow over a NACA 0012 aerofoil.

➢ Assumptions:
The assumptions that we are going to take in this experiment are described below:
1. The planer is 2D.
2. The fluid is air.
3. No slip condition is applied.
4. The flow is steady.
5. Symmetry.

➢ Geometry:
1. Download the coordinates of NACA 0012 aerofoil from aerofoiltools and import them on
excel file.

2. After arranging them on excel, save them as “txt” format and export them on Ansys
workbench geometry.
3. In geometry, go to concept. In concept go to 3D curve section and add coordinates file from
there and generate aerofoil.

4. In concept, go to surface from sketches section. Select the aerofoil and click on apply. After
applying, click generate.

5. Go to sketching in XY plane, and select lines in draw. Draw a rectangle on aerofoil.

6. Go to constraints and check the constraint status if it is under constrained or not. Then select
x-axis and both horizontal lines and modify them.
7. Now go to draw section and select arc by 3 points. Sketch arc on first vertical line and then
align it.

8. Go to modify and select trim. Trim both front vertical lines. Add dimensions on vertical and
horizontal lines of 10m.

9. Go to concept and select surface from sketches option. Select sketch 1 in XY-Plane and click
on apply. After applying, click on generate.

10. Go to create and select Boolean option. In Boolean, select body and apply subtract operation.
Select the target body and click on apply. Then select aerofoil as tool body and click on
apply. After applying, click generate.
11. In XY-Plane, add new sketch. Draw lines on positive and negative x-axis. Also add vertical
lines on aerofoil. Add dimensions of 1m and extend all the lines.

12. Go to concept and select line from sketches. Select the sketch 2 from XY-Plane and click on
apply. After applying, click on generate. After generating, go to projection and select all the
lines inside the body. Go to target option, select domain, click apply and generate.

13. Go to line body from 2 part-2 bodies and right click on line body. Then suppress body.

➢ Meshing:
Close geometry and open meshing.
1. Right click on mesh and go to insert section. Select sizing and select all the edges. After
selecting edges click apply.

2. After applying select the type as number of divisions and add no. of divisions as 200. Select
the behaviour hard and second bias type. Set the bias factor to 5e5.

3. Right click on mesh and insert sizing again. Select 3 right side horizontal lines by selecting
edges. Select the type as number of divisions and add no. of divisions as 150. Select the
behaviour hard and second bias type. Set the bias factor to 1000.

4. Again, insert sizing and this time select small center

horizontal lines. Add number of divisions 300 and
select behaviour as hard.
5. Again, insert sizing and select arcs and leading edge this time. Add number of divisions 100
and select behaviour hard and apply.

6. Right click on mesh and insert face mapped meshing. Select all the faces and generate mesh.

➢ Setup:
Close meshing and open setup.

1. Select double precision option, processing option parallel and set the processes to 4.
2. In models select Spalart-Allmaras option. In materials select fluid as air and set the density to
1.225 and viscosity to 1.81e-5.

3. Go to boundary conditions. Select inlet and in inlet, select velocity specification method as
magnitude and direction. Set the turbulent viscosity ratio as 1. Set the aerofoil as no slip
condition.

4. Go to reference value and compute from inlet. Then go to monitors and create monitors of
drag and lift. In drag monitor, select aerofoil axis as X and in lift monitor, select aerofoil axis
as Y.

5. In residuals, uncheck convergence for all the residuals except continuity. Set the absolute
criteria as 1e-6.
6. Go to solution initialization and select hybrid. Click on initialize. After initializing go to run
calculation and set no. of iterations 5000, reporting interval 10 and profile update interval as
10. Then calculate.

➢ Result:
Close the setup and open results. In results select the contour.

1. To check pressure, select the variable as pressure. You can see that on upper surface, the
pressure is higher at leading edge and lower at trailing edge. And in lower surface, the
pressure is higher at trailing edge and lower at leading edge.
2. To check the velocity, select the variable as velocity and set number of contours to 200. You
can see that the point where the air first interacts with the aerofoil at leading edge, the
velocity is minimum as the region is blue. On the upper surface the velocity is higher at
leading edge. On the upper surface at the back there is also a minimum velocity region. And
on the trailing edge at lower surface, the velocity is higher as the region is dark green.

➢ What did I learn?

I learnt that how the flow of air acts when it interacts with the aerofoil. At the
point where it first collides with the aerofoil, there the velocity will be zero and it will be
known as stagnation point. I learnt how the velocity and pressure region will vary if we put
some object in the pathway of the flow of air such as aerofoil.
