Two facts that I learned from these pearls and their pictures are the lilies of the Valley Faberge Egg reflects a Western European background rather than Russian decorative arts traditions. I also learned that the egg was a gift from the Czar to his wife.

Pearls are formed when irritant lodges into the tissue of a mollusk. Then, a substance called nacre is created and the peal creation begins. Nacre builds us on the layers and surrounds the irritant to protect the irritant. After a few years, the pearl is formed. A natural pearl is formed by chance and unintentional. These are formed naturally. Cultured pearls are pearls that are formed by humans and can be told differently by an x-ray of the inside of the pearl. Cultured Pearls are man-made.

I can conclude that pearls, if real, can cost a LOT of money and it is hard to find real pearls these day due to the fact that the most pearls are man-made due to rarity of pearls.

2. Based on what you have learned, why did John Steinbeck choose the pearl as the main element of his novel?
Based on what I have learned, I believe that Steinbeck choose the pearl as the main subject of his novel because they have an interesting background and are very complicated stones. It could also be the fact that they are rare and judging from the picture on the cover, the characters in the book search for them and the rarity of the stone can make an interesting and adventurous novel
