Ecotourism is a unique way for travellers to engage in sustainable tourism while vacationing. This
specific type of tourism is now increasingly becoming one of the more popular, with growth rates increasing
every year. The United Nations, aware of the fact that tourism could be one of the most detrimental activities
if not planned in accordance with the threshold imposed by nature, has declared the celebration of the
International Day of Ecotourism, to promote sustainable practices in this growing industry.
Recently, The Division for Sustainable Development, Small Island Developing States Unit, decided that
in preparation for the International Day of Ecotourism, it would be beneficial to identify successful practices
of ecotourism on small islands. In order for ecotourism to be categorized as successful, it must meet the
following criteria: it must combine natural and cultural tourism; it must involve local populations in the
program, including providing educational resources to the local community, it must identity, manage and
conserve the natural and cultural environment as well as the resources on the island; it must generate
practices that will lead to the future sustainability of the island. If these criteria are followed by an "eco"
organization, it deserves to be recognized as successful.

Most of the world's people are city dwellers. In 2050, about 70% of the world's population will live
in urban areas. So it is very important to plan our cities well for the future. How can we do this? One idea is
the smart city. In a smart city, modern infrastructure helps people to have a good life. For example, if you
want to go to the cinema, you can see which films are on your mobile phone. You can also see if there are
any traffic jams, and how long it takes to get there. If there are no tickets for the film, you can buy them on
your phone. If there is a problem with the trains, the information is on your phone. Smart cities also use
technology to solve environmental problems. In the future, many cities will be underwater because of
climate change. Some architects are already planning for this. They want to build floating cities in the sea.
These cities will not only have homes and offices, but also parks and farms. They will produce their own
food, and they will use the power of the sun and the wind to operate. Floating cities will be very friendly to
the environment. Some people think that we need to make our existing cities better places to live. They want
to create green lifestyle cities. In these cities, people don't use cars. Instead, they walk or use public
transport. There are lots of parks and gardens in the city. There are also lots of trees, so the air is very clean.
In some green cities, there are no buildings with more than five floors. People live in small houses, and there
are no big shops or shopping centers. Everything is peaceful and quiet. There are many different ideas for the
cities of the future. But all of them have one thing in common: they are good for people and good for the
planet.
Question 18: What is one way that smart cities use technology to help people?
A. Provide information about traffic and transportation on mobile phones
B. Allow people to buy movie tickets online
C. Warn people about flooding
D. All of the above
Question 19: Which of these is a feature of a "green lifestyle city"?
A. Lots of tall buildings B. Large shopping malls and tall buildings
C. No cars, only walking and public transportation D. Lots of factories and offices
Question 20: What does the word "them" in last sentence refer to?
A. cities B. ideas C. future D. people
Question 21: How are floating cities good for the environment?
A. They are cheaper to build B. They are easy to maintain
C. They produce their own food and energy D. They are safer from natural disasters
Question 22: What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Cities need to be modernized B. Smart cities and green cities are the future
C. Most people will live in cities by 2050 D. Technology can solve all city problems
Biological diversity has become widely recognized as a critical conservation issue only in the past
two decades. The rapid destruction of the tropical rain forests, which are the ecosystems with the highest
known species diversity on Earth, has awakened people to the importance and fragility of biological
diversity. The high rate of species extinctions in these environments is jolting, but it is important to
recognize the significance of biological diversity in all ecosystems. As the human population continues to
expand, it will negatively affect one after another of Earth’s ecosystems. In terrestrial ecosystems and in
fringe marine ecosystems (such as wetlands), the most common problem is habitat destruction. In most
situations, the result is irreversible. Now humans are beginning to destroy marine ecosystems through other
types of activities, such as disposal and runoff of poisonous waste; in less than two centuries, by
significantly reducing the variety of species on Earth, they have irrevocably redirected the course of
evolution.
However, nothing has ever equaled the magnitude and speed with which the human species is
altering the physical and chemical world and demolishing the environment. In fact, there is wide agreement
that it is the rate of change humans are inflicting, even more than the changes themselves, that will lead to
biological devastation. Life on Earth has continually been in flux as slow physical and chemical changes
have occurred on Earth, but life needs time to adapt-time for migration and genetic adaptation within
existing species and time for the proliferation of new genetic material and new species that may be able to
survive in new environments.
Question 23: What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs
B. The variety of species found in tropical rain forests
C. The time required for species to adapt to new environments
D. The impact of human activities on Earth’s ecosystems
Question 24: The word “critical” is OPPOSITE in meaning to .

ecosystems EXCEPT .
A. habitat destruction in wetlands
B. the introduction of new varieties of plant species
C. damage to marine ecosystems
D. destruction of the tropical rain forests
Question 27: According to the passage, natural evolutionary change is different from changes caused by
humans in that changes caused by humans ______
A. Affect fewer ecosystems B. Are occurring at a much faster rate
C. Are reversible D. Are less devastating to most species
Question 28: Which of the following can best replace “in flux”?
A. Breaking B. Producing C. Changing D. Increasing
Question 29: It can be inferred from the passage that _____
A. Human influence on ecosystems should not be a factor in determining public policy.
B. Humans should be more conscious of the influence they have o ecosystems.
C. The extinction of a few species is an acceptable consequence of human progress.
D. Technology will provide solutions to problems caused by the destruction of ecosystems
Space travel has always been a fascinating topic for many people. The idea of being able to explore the
vast unknown beyond our planet is exhilarating. However, space travel is not as easy as it seems. There are
many challenges that must be overcome before we can even think about sending humans on long missions
into space.
One of the first challenges of space travel is launching a spacecraft into orbit. This requires a lot of energy
and careful planning. Once in orbit, the spacecraft needs to operate smoothly, with all systems functioning
properly. Any malfunction can be catastrophic, so astronauts need to be well-trained and ready to handle
any situation that may arise.
In zero gravity, objects float around, making it difficult to move around. Astronauts need to wear special
spacesuits to protect themselves from the harsh environment of space. These suits provide oxygen and
regulate temperature, allowing astronauts to work outside the spacecraft during a mission.
Astronomy is an important part of space travel. It helps us understand the universe and how it works.
Scientists use telescopes to study planets, stars, and galaxies. They also use satellites to collect data and
images from space.
Space missions are carefully planned and executed. Each mission has a specific goal, whether it is to
explore a new planet or conduct experiments in space. The success of a mission depends on the teamwork of
all involved, from the engineers who design the spacecraft to the astronauts who carry out the mission.
Despite the challenges, space travel has come a long way since the first satellite was launched into orbit
over 60 years ago. We have sent humans to the moon and explored other planets in our solar system. With
continued advancements in technology, we may one day be able to send humans on long missions to explore
the far reaches of our galaxy.
In conclusion, space travel is a complex and challenging field that requires careful planning and
execution. From launching a spacecraft into orbit to conducting experiments in zero gravity, every aspect of
space travel requires precision and expertise. However, the rewards of exploring the unknown are
immeasurable, making space travel an exciting and worthwhile endeavor.

Read the following passage. Mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
Scientists believe they now have scientific evidence to prove that ecosystems work better when there is
a greater variety of species within them. This biodiversity is being lost destroying natural mechanisms that
could repair the damage caused by man.
Findings show that losing plants and animals is not only reducing our quality of life but actually
endangering our very existence. We cut down rich rainforests and replace them with one species plantations,
such as pine and eucalyptus. We plough up meadows rich in different grasses and herbs and replace them
with one grass, for instance rye or wheat.
When a natural ecosystem is simplified the basic processes in the ecosystem are altered and even
damaged. Without their biodiversity, they are not able to serve as the natural cleaners of our planet. No
longer are they able to absorb the carbon dioxide that is being produced in excess. The result is global
warming, caused by the increase in the 'greenhouse effect', and ultimately, or even sooner, there will be a
change in the world's climate.
Question 37. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Variety of Species B. Natural Mechanisms
C. How Ecosystems Work Better D. The Loss of Biodiversity
Question 38. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To show natural mechanisms at work. B. To give examples of the loss of biodiversity
C. To give example of variety of species. D. To show how ecosystems can work better.

ecosystems?
A. There is a loss of biodiversity B. There is global warming
C. The basic processes are altered D. There is a change in the climate
Question 40. The word "them" in paragraph 2 refers to __________.
A. rain forests B. Animals C. species D. Plants
Question 41. As used in paragraph 3, the word “absorb” could be beat replaced which of the following?
A. draw back B. pay back C. take in D. get rid of
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
For many years, scientists have been arguing about global warming. While they don't all agree about
what this might mean for Planet Earth, many think it is going on - and that we can do something about it. We
need a few more years to gather facts before anyone can say for sure. But people need to start now to do
things to stop it.
There are many types of gases in our atmosphere. Some of them absorb the heat from the sun and
control our climate. "Greenhouse gases” are those that hold the heat around the planet's surface. When we
increase the level of these gases, we upset the balance. These extra gases trap even more heat.
Some scientists say global warming has already started to change the environment. The Earth's
temperature has risen one degree Fahrenheit this century. Many scientists believe it could rise from two to
eight degrees Fahrenheit in the next hundred years. This would be the fastest rise in 10,000 years.
Sea levels could rise. Ice sheets could melt and add to the water level. Many places near the coast would
be in danger of flooding. If the climate change is too large and too fast, some plants and animals could really
suffer. They could even die out. Weather could become more violent and extreme. In some places there
would be more forest fires. But in other areas there would be more rain and snow, storms and floods.

answer to each of the questions
Tourism will always have an impact on the places visited. Sometimes the impact is good, but often it is
negative. For example, if lots of people visit one place, then this can damage the environment. The question
is - how can we minimize the problems without preventing people from travelling and visiting places?
The main aim of ecotourism is to reduce the negative impact that tourism has on the environment and local
people. The idea is to encourage tourists to think about what they do when they visit a place.
It's great to talk about protecting the environment, but how do you actually do this? There are a number of
key points. Tourists shouldn't drop litter, they should stay on the paths, they shouldn't interfere with wildlife
and they should respect local customs and traditions.
Some people see ecotourism as a contradiction. They say that any tourism needs infrastructure - roads,
airports and hotels. The more tourists that visit a place, the more of these are needed and, by building more
of these, you can't avoid damaging the environment.
But, of course, things aren't so black and white. Living in a place of natural beauty doesn't mean that you
shouldn't benefit from things like better roads. As long as the improvements benefit the local people and not
just the tourists, and the local communities are consulted on plans and changes, then is there really a
problem?
In 2002 the United Nations celebrated the "International Year of Ecotourism". Over the past twenty years,
more and more people have started taking eco-holidays. In countries such as Ecuador, Nepal, Costa Rica and
Kenya, ecotourism represents a significant proportion of the tourist industry.
