1. Major issues that led to the Texas Revolution – Why were these issues?

a. Immigration - In the Law of April 6, 1830, Mexico forbids immigration from the U.S where
most colonists still had family.

b. Slavery - The U.S. colonists brought in slaves, an action the Mexican government
opposed.

c. Constitution of 1824 – Santa Anna refused to follow

3. Declaration of Nov 7, 1835

a. Written by? Consultation

b. Main idea of doc? Explain to Mexican gov’t why fighting, warns Mexico to restore
Constitution of 1824 or Texas will create their own gov’t

4. Battles of the Revolution

a.Gonzales – 1st battle. Mexicans tried to take a brass cannon given to the town to defend
themselves from the Natives. Texans won

 Words on flag- “Come and Take It”

b. Alamo - 1836 Mexicans attacked the Alamo mission in San Antonio. Texans were greatly
outnumbered. Santa Anna ordered all killed. Texans were then inspired to seek revenge.

c. San Jacinto - Final battle, lasted 18 mins; Mexican army lost, TX won independence. Texan
army used the woods to shield themselves for a surprise attack. Battle cries, “Remember
the Alamo, Remember the Goliad”
5. Runaway Scrape
a. Describe – period of time when Texans left their farms and homes and fled east because
they feared for their lives after hearing about the Alamo. Houston ordered Gonzales burned
so Mexicans couldn’t take any supplies there.

6. Goliad Massacre

a. General Fannin – TX colonel who was told by Houston to withdraw to Victoria. He waited
for his troops to return from Refugio then decided to leave the fort at Goliad. Trapped by
General Urrea at Battle of Coleto. Marched back to Goliad as prisoners. He and more than
400 Texans shot and killed.

7. William B. Travis

a. Role in the Revolution – Defender of the Alamo

b. What is he most famous for? – Writing “Victory or Death” plea, asking for help to defend the
Alamo from the Mexican army.

8. Santa Anna

a. Role in the Revolution – President of Mexico and general of Mexican Army

b. Orders at the Battle of the Alamo- kill all prisoners. Left alive a few civilians to spread news of
what happened there

c. What happened to him at The Battle of San Jacinto? - tried to run away & hide but was
captured wearing a private’s uniform

9. Sam Houston

a. Role in revolution – Leader of Texas army

b. What he did with troops prior to San Jacinto – took time to train at Jared Groce’s
plantation. Criticized by many but a very smart move as a general of TX army

c. What happened to him at San Jacinto – injured – shot in ankle


10. Juan Seguin

a. Role in revolution- He was a Tejano who joined the Texans because he didn't agree with
Santa Anna. He fought in nearly every battle. Led his Tejano Company during the Battle of
San Jacinto

12. Lorenzo de Zavala –


a. He had worked to establish a democratic government in Mexico, but when it became clear
that Santa Anna would not make reforms, he moved to Texas. In 1824, he was elected as
President of the Constitutional Congress and endorsed the Mexican Federal Constitution of
1824.

b. helped draft the Texas Constitution and was chosen as temporary vice president of Texas.
