Linear and quadratic equations

The general form of the linear equation is:

𝛼𝑋 + 𝑏 = 0 𝛼≠0
Now we can solve it
𝛼𝑋 + 𝑏 = 0
∴ 𝛼𝑋 = −𝑏
Dividing both sides over 𝛼

Quadratic equations
The general form of the quadratic equation is

𝒂𝑿𝟐 + 𝒃𝑿 + 𝒄 = 𝟎 𝜶, 𝒃 ≠ 𝟎
The above equation can be solved by using two methods:

Methods

formula
‫طريقة التحليل‬
‫القانون‬
Quadratic equations
Example 1
Find the value of X that satisfies the following equations:
Find the value of X that satisfies the following equation.
𝑿𝟐 − 𝟑𝑿 + 𝟐 = 𝟎
Solution
1- first method
𝑿𝟐 − 𝟑𝑿 + 𝟐 = 𝟎
(𝑿 − 𝟏)(𝑿—2)=0
Then
X-1=0 or X-2=0
X=1 or X=2
Quadratic equations
2- second method
By comparing this equation by general form of quadratic equation
𝑋 2 − 3𝑋 + 2 = 0
𝑎𝑋 2 + 𝑏𝑋 + 𝑐 = 0

𝑎 = 1, 𝑏 = −3 , 𝑐 = 2
Hence

Example (2)
𝟐𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟐 = 𝟎

By comparing this equation by general form of quadratic equation

𝟐𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟐 = 𝟎
𝒂𝑿𝟐 + 𝒃𝑿 + 𝒄 = 𝟎

𝒂 = 𝟐, 𝒃 = −𝟓 , 𝒄 = 𝟐
Hence

−𝒃 ± 𝒃𝟐 − 𝟒𝒂𝒄 𝟓 ± 𝟐𝟓 − 𝟏𝟔
𝑿= =

𝟓+𝟑 𝟖 𝟓−𝟑 𝟏
𝑿= = =𝟐 𝒐𝒓 𝑿= =

Example (3)
4𝑿𝟐 − 𝟏𝟐𝑿 = 𝟕
Solution (first method)
4𝑿𝟐 − 𝟏𝟐𝑿 = 𝟕
4𝑿𝟐 − 𝟏𝟐𝑿 − 𝟕 = 𝟎
(𝟐𝑿 − 𝟕)(𝟐𝑿+1)=0
Then
𝟐𝑿 − 𝟕 = 𝟎 or 𝟐𝑿+1=0
𝟐𝑿 = 𝟕 or 𝟐𝑿 = −𝟏
𝟕 −𝟏
𝑿= or 𝑿=

Example (3)
4𝑿𝟐 − 𝟏𝟐𝑿 = 𝟕
Second method
𝑎 = 4, 𝑏 = −12 , 𝑐 = −7
Hence
−𝑏 ± 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐 12 ± 144 + 112
𝑋= =

Example (4)
𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟐 𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟑=12
Example (4)
𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟐 𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟑=12
Solution

𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟐 𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟑=12 (1)

Let 𝒚 = 𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 + 𝟑
By squaring the two sides or rasing both sides to power 2
So
𝒚𝟐 = 𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 +3 (2)
Hence
𝒚𝟐 -3= 𝑿𝟐 − 𝟓𝑿 (𝟑)
Example (4)
Substituting from (2) and (3) into (1)
𝒚𝟐 -3+2y=12

𝒚𝟐 + 𝟐𝐲 − 𝟑 − 𝟏𝟐 = 𝟎
𝒚𝟐 + 𝟐𝐲 − 𝟏𝟓 = 𝟎
(𝐲 + 𝟓) (y-3)=0
then
𝐲+𝟓=𝟎 or 𝐲 − 𝟑 = 𝟎
𝐲 = −𝟓 or 𝐲 = 𝟑
