Assignment 1

Semiconductor Devices (ECE 102)

Total marks: 70 Due Date: 17/02/2025

1. Consider the wave function Ψ(𝑥,𝑡)=𝐴 Sin(n𝜋𝑥)𝑒−𝑗𝜔𝑡 for 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1. Determine A so that

1
∫0 |Ψ(x, t)|2 𝑑𝑥 = 1 [5 Marks]
2. Derive the simplified one-dimensional solution of the particle in a box model. In this
case, an electron is confined in an infinite potential well of width ‘L’ (as shown in the
figure below). Sate the exact solution for the wavefunction in region 2.

Also determine the probability of finding the particle between the following limits for n=1:
I. 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ L/4
II. L/4 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ L/2 [5x4 Marks]
III. 0≤𝑥≤L

3. An electron is bound in a one-dimensional infinite potential well with a width of 10 Å.

(a) Calculate the first three energy levels ( in eV) that the electron may occupy.
Assuming m* = m0 = 9.1×10-31 kg
(b) If the electron drops from the third to the second energy level, what is the
wavelength of a photon that might be emitted? [5x2 Marks]
4. Explain what the atomic packing factor (APF) is. With appropriate schematics, find the
APF for S.C., B.C.C, and F.C.C latices. [5x3 Marks]
5. Explain the dispersion relation of a free electron. Draw the E-k diagram for the free
electron. Show how the curvature of the E-k relation determines the effective mass of
electrons. [5 Marks]
6. Explain the concepts of Direct and indirect bandgap semiconductors with appropriate
examples. Include the E-k diagram in your explanation. [5 Marks]
7. Let 𝑇 = 300 𝐾. Determine the probability that an energy level 2kT above the Fermi
energy is occupied by an electron. [5 Marks]
8. Assume the Fermi energy level is 0.30 eV below the conduction band energy Ec. Assume
T = 300 K. Determine the probability of a state being occupied by an electron at 𝐸 = 𝐸𝑐 +
𝑘𝑇/4 [5 Marks]
