Introduction and Course Outline (1)

The document outlines the course content for Public Health Engineering III (PHE III), focusing on alternative sanitation methods, wastewater treatment, and solid waste management for individual households and small communities. Key topics include sewage sludge treatment, industrial wastewater management, and practical demonstrations of various treatment processes. The course aims to equip students with essential principles and understanding of wastewater management and disposal methods.

The flow chart below shows the wastes generated in a community
(Both Town and Rural).

 In Public Health Engineering II (PHE II) you covered sewage collection,

conveyance to a central treatment plant, different methods of treating the same
and disposal.
 This is the conventional way of safely handling sewage (Conventional
Sewerage System).
 It is not possible to have conventional sewerage systems in all towns and rural
areas.

It is for this reason, alternative forms of sanitation to serve the remaining areas.
 The unserved areas are usually individual households or small communities.
 Alternative forms of sanitation will be covered in this Unit (PHE III).
 In PHE II, Sludge which is a byproduct of sewage treatment was not covered.
Sludge treatment and disposal will be covered in this unit.
 Sewage is liquid wastes generated in a community
 In addition, solid and gaseous wastes are also generated.
 If solid waste is not properly handled and safely disposed – it can pose a
public health problem and environmental pollution.
 Solid waste Management will be covered in this Unit.
 Other topics which will be covered in this Unit include industrial
wastewater, adsorption isotherms and reuse of sewage and industrial
effluents.

PHE III – COURSE OUTLINE:

1. Wastewater Treatment and Disposal for Individual Households and Small Communities
2. Treatment and Disposal of Sewage Sludge
3. Unit Processes of Physical, Chemical and Biological Treatment of Wastewater
4. Reuse of Sewage
5. Industrial Waste Management
6. Solid Waste Management
7. Adsorption
8. Practical/Demonstration:
 Demonstration of Sludge Treatment at Sewage Works
 Demonstration of Physical, Chemical and Biological Treatment of Wastewater
 Specific Gravity Tests
Purpose of PHE III:

It is intended to provide a student with essential principles applied in waste water

management.

Course Objectives:

The course objectives are to equip the student to be able to:

i. Demonstrate understanding of waste water treatment and disposal for individual

households and small communities
ii. Demonstrate understanding sewage sludge treatment and disposal
iii. Demonstrate understanding of industrial wastewater treatment processes and disposal
iv. Demonstrate understanding of adsorption isotherms and their application in
engineering processes and
v. Demonstrate understanding of solid waste collection, treatment and disposal methods
