(d) F(x, y, z) = xi + yj + zk

2. Classify each of the following vector fields as conservative or not conservative. If the vector field
is conservative, find a potential function.
(a) F(x, y) = ⟨ey + sin(x), ex + cos(y)⟩
(b) F(x, y) = ⟨y, x⟩
(c) F(x, y, z) = ⟨4x, 2yz, y 2 ⟩
(d) F(x, y, z) = ⟨2x, 2z, y⟩

3. Let C denote the oriented line segment from (1, 1) to (1, −1). Evaluate the line integral C
F·dr,
where F is the vector field F(x, y) = ⟨x10 exy sin(y 2 + x2 ), 3⟩.

4. A force field F(x, y) = ⟨x, x⟩ acts on an object that moves in a straight line from (0, 0) to (3, 2).
Find the work done by F on the object. (Concept check: Is “in a straight line” required in
this problem? Could the answer be different if the object moves from (0, 0) to (3, 2) some other
way?)

(a) If F is conservative then Qx (x, y) = Py (x, y).
(b) If F is conservative then the domain of F is simply connected.
(c) If Qx (x, y) = Py (x, y) then F is conservative.
(d) If F has a simply connected domain then F is path-independent.
(e) If F is conservative then F is path-independent.
(f) If Qx (x, y) = Py (x, y) and the domain of F is simply connected then F is conservative.
