Determination of volumetric flowrate using Hydraulic
Bench
Objectives:
The objectives of this experiment are:
1. To measure the volumetric flow rate of water using a hydraulic bench setup.
2. To explore the principles of fluid flow measurement and the role of the hydraulic bench
in achieving accurate flow rate determination.
3. To examine the relationship between flow rate and various operational parameters of
the hydraulic bench.
Introduction:
The hydraulic bench is a specialized experimental setup designed to measure the volumetric
flow rate of fluids, offering valuable insights into fluid dynamics. In this experiment, the flow
rate of water will be determined using the bench, which includes pumps, flow meters, and
tanks to regulate and measure water flow. This study enhances our understanding of the
relationship between flow rate, pressure, and velocity, providing practical knowledge essential
for designing efficient fluid systems in various engineering applications.
Theory:
The volumetric flow rate refers to the volume of fluid that passes through a section of a pipe or
channel per unit of time:
Flow rate = Volume (V) / Time (T)
The hydraulic bench is an experimental apparatus designed to analyze fluid flow behavior and
measure the volumetric flow rate in a controlled environment. It functions based on fluid
dynamics principles, emphasizing flow rate measurements and the relationship between
volume and time.
Methodology:
The methodology of this experiment is as follows:
Apparatus:
The apparatus used in this experiment is as follows:
1. Centrifugal pump
2. Hydraulic bench
3. Flowmeter
Procedure:
Set the water flow to a constant rate and start the hydraulic bench.
Use a stopwatch to track the amount of water collected in the measuring tank over a
specified time period.
Measure the volume of water in the graduated tank.
Determine the flow rate by applying the formula Q=V/Q
Record the results and repeat the process with varying flow settings.

Conclusion
In this experiment, the volumetric flow rate of water was successfully measured using a
hydraulic bench. The results demonstrated the relationship between volume, time, and flow
rate, reinforcing fundamental fluid dynamics principles. By analyzing the recorded data, it was
observed that variations in volume and time significantly impact the calculated flow rate. The
experiment also highlighted the effectiveness of the hydraulic bench in providing accurate and
controlled flow measurements.
