CHAPTER 4 - CONVERSATION

Dialogue 1
Ali : I’m having problems with my computer
Bella : What’s wrong with it?
Ali : for some reason, it won’t turn on
Bella : have you checked the connections on your computer?
Ali : What connections?
Bella : there are cords that connect your computer to a power outlet
Ali : will the cords keep it from turning on?
Bella : It won’t turn on if the cords aren’t connected
Ali : I didn’t think of that
Bella : Try it and see if it works
Ali : I think that I will, thanks.
Bella : It should work, but let me know if it doesn’t
Dialogue 2
Sam : why does your computer run very slowly?
Yu : are you sure it’s not because it opens too many programs?
Sam : No, I also hear the sound of the hard drive constantly. Here, you can hear it
Yu : You’re right. Do you think it might be a virus?
Sam : I think so. An unfamiliar program started by itself as well
Yu : Let’s just bring it to a service centre
Sam : Okay

Dialogue 3
Andy : Something’s wrong with my laptop. Can you help me?
Kyle : what’s going on?
Andy : I updated my laptop and the power went out when it was updating. Now it keeps saying to
restart my laptop to finish the updates
Kyle : and then?
Andy : Every time I do it, it just keeps popping up with the same messages
Kyle : I think I can fix it. We have to repeat this process a few times until we see the Automatic Repair
screen. Then, select troubleshoot and refresh your laptop
Andy : Really? That’s very helpful! Thank you!
Dialogue 4
Sally : Good morning, how can I help you?
Goldie : I am a new student. I need a new laptop to study, make an assignment, take notes, etc.
Sally : Absolutely! We have a few options that would be perfect for you. What’s your budget like?
Goldie : I don’t want to spend too much. Maybe around Rp. 3.000.000 – 5.000.000
Sally : okay, we have a few laptops in that price range. Let me show you what we have
Here’s a good option. This laptop has an Intel Core i3 Processor, 8GB of RAM, and a SSD
Goldie : that sounds good. How much is it?
Sally : This is Rp. 4.500.000. it’s a good value for the specs it has
Goldie : Can I see and try it out?
Sally : of course. Let me get it for you.
Goldie : this laptop is nice. Can it run any programs that I might need for school, like Microsoft office?
Sally : yes, it comes with Windows 10 and office 365. You’ll be able to use Microsoft word, excel, and
power point for your school.
Goldie : that’s great. Do you have any other options?
Sally : Sure, we have another one as well. It has similar processor and RAM but a larger hard drive
Goldie : How much does it cost?
Sally : that one is 5.000.000 it’s a bit more expensive but it has more storage space
Goldie : I think I’ll choose the first one
Sally : Great, I’ll grab it for you. Do you need any accessories, like a case or a mouse?
Goldie : Yes, I’ll take a mouse
Sally : Great, I’ll add it to your purchase. Thank you. Good luck with your studies
Goldie : Thank you, I appreciate it
Dialogue 5
Bill : Wow, I love computers
Harry : Really? They’re kind of confusing to me
Bill : I’m good with computers. I own one and use the internet every day
Harry : that’s cool, what sites do you like to visit?
Bill : I like video sites like YouTube and Google video. What about you?
Harry : I prefer social networking sites, like Facebook and Tiktok. I like being able to talk to my friends
online. I also like news sites like BBC World News and Fox News
Bill : That’s cool. See! Computers aren’t that confusing. What kind do you have?
Harry : I have a laptop. I like it because I can carry it around with me and do my homework on it
Bill : I do my homework on my computer too, but mine is a desktop
Harry : that’s cool. Do you know how much memory your computer has?
Bill : No, but I think it’s pretty good. Yours probably has a lot of memory, right?
Harry : yeah, it does. It’s also a Mac, made by Apple
Bill : oh, I have a Dell computer. It uses Windows
Harry : my parents both use Windows. They like it better
Bill : yeah, my parents like Windows too. It’s easier for them, and I am more used to it. That’s why I
use it now
Harry : I had a Dell computer, but the screen was only 12 inches, so I got a Mac that was 18 inches
instead. It’s easier to see what I’m doing on the computer with 18 inches screen
Bill : I bet! I’ve never gotten a new computer or upgraded mine at all
Harry : Oh really? I’ve upgraded my Mac a few times. Mac’s look pretty cool. Hey, do you think you
could help me with my English homework on the computer?
Bill : Sure. I always do my homework on the computer. I can help you
Harry : Awesome, thanks! English will be much more fun to learn on the computer
DIALOGUE 6
Matt : my phone is almost off. Do you have a charger?
Maya : yes, there is a portable charger over there on the table
Matt : that’s perfect, thanks
Maya : can you believe how far technology has come?
Matt : it’s hard to believe, isn’t it? It’s like you said earlier. There were barely any bank machines when
we were growing up
Maya : now you can pay for almost anything online or by using an app on your phone
Matt : it’s unreal. It seems like yesterday that everyone was using home phones
Maya : now, almost nobody has or uses a home phone. Everyone including kids have cell phones
Matt : do you really think it’s for the best though? I mean it used to be nice when people couldn’t bug
you at all times of the day and night
Maya : yes, I think there are good points and bad points to it all. I mean on one hand they make life
easier when it comes to business
Matt : yes, I agree with that point, but I think that people are too dependent on them. Nobody can relax
and you can never really take a day off
Maya : yes, you are right, but can you imagine life without cell phones?
Matt : not anymore. I rely on it all the time now. I can’t live without it. I even check my phone
messages in the middle of the night
Maya : I hear you there. They sure have changed how we go about our everyday lives, haven’t they?
Matt : as we speak another message comes through
DIALOGUE 7
Rose : I read an interesting article about technology on the train this morning
Julie : really? What did it say?
Rose : it was discussing whether technology in our lives is a good or a bad thing
Julie : surely. It’s a good thing. It makes our lives much easier
Rose : well, that’s what I thought too but the article raised some interesting some interesting points
Julie : such as?
Rose : the fact that computers were designed to make a variety of tasks easier so that they could be
completed quicker. However, with PCs, smartphones and laptops, we spend more time than ever
before staring at screens. The article said that the tools we created to give us more free time have
actually started consuming more of our free time.
Julie : actually, that’s true. People get obsessed with their phones and end up staring at them for hours
and hours every day. That’s in addition to all the time they spend on their computers at work.
Rose : I know the article also talked how instant messaging and being constantly connected to the
internet had made it impossible for us to ever really switch off our brains and relax
Julie : that’s true too. I often put my phone on flight mode at home so nobody can call me
