unittest

The document is a climate test for SNC2D students at Ontario Virtual School, consisting of multiple-choice questions, true/false statements, matching terms with descriptions, and short answer questions. It assesses knowledge on climate concepts, the greenhouse effect, and the impact of climate change on biodiversity. The test is divided into four parts: Knowledge, Thinking/Inquiry, Communication, and Application, with a total of 34 marks available.

Part A: Knowledge (8 marks)

1. Most of the Earth’s natural greenhouse effect is caused by:
a. carbon dioxide
b. nitrous oxide
c. methane
d. water vapour

2. A factor that does not affect climate is:

a. presence of large bodies of water
b. presence of forest vegetation
c. land formations
d. distance from the equator

3. It is ‘hot and humid in the amazon’ is an example of:

a. weather
b. climate
c. global warming
d. climate change

4. When radiation hits matter…

a. It can be absorbed by it
b. It can be transmitted through it
c. It can be reflected by it
d. All of the above

5. Which of the following is NOT a renewable energy source?

a. Solar energy
b. Wind energy
c. Natural gas
d. Hydroelectric energy

6. The lithosphere is:

a. Earth’s different forms of water
b. Earth’s living things
c. the Earth’s crust
d. The layers of gas surrounding Earth

7. Which light finds it most difficult to get through the atmosphere?

a. infrared light
b. ultraviolet light
c. visible light
d. radio waves

8. Which of the following actions can help mitigate climate change?

a. Increasing fossil fuel use
b. Deforestation
c. Planting trees
d. Burning waste

Part B: Thinking/Inquiry (8 marks)

Indicate whether each of the following statements is TRUE or FALSE. If the statement is false,
rewrite it to make it true (2 marks each).

9. Heating and cooling of the ocean by the sun’s rays is how energy is moved around the globe

True

10. Earth’s climate can change both naturally and from human causes.

True

11. The Lithosphere is a layer of the atmosphere.

False

12. The greenhouse effect is a natural process that helps keep the Earth's surface warm
enough to support life.

True

Part C: Communication (10 marks)

Match each term on the left with the most appropriate description on the right (5 marks).

13.
(a) Atmosphere ____
e Includes water trapped in glaciers and
(b) Biosphere ____
d A layer of the atmosphere
(c) Troposphere ____
b Includes deserts, forests, rainforest and wetlands
(d) Mesosphere ____
a Includes water in the air
(e) Hydrosphere ____
c Where all of Earth’s weather takes place

Communication throughout the test will be evaluated on each question in part B, C and D for the
following (5 marks total):

Part D: Application (8 marks)

Write a short answer to each of these questions (2 marks each).

14. Identify and explain one major consequence of climate change on biodiversity.

One major consequence is the weather. Major changes in the weather effects
them, like storms or forest firescan lead to animals losing habitat and being extinct.

15. If you were a climatologist wishing to study the climate of Canada 10 000 years ago, what
are two methods of gathering data and how would you use these methods?

Two methods of gathering data I would use is to find fossilized organism in the
ocean to determine the ocean tempuratures. I would find old plants in the lake or
mud and study the pollen in them to determine the kind of plant and what the
climate was like.

16. Explain in detail the difference between weather and climate. Global warming primarily
drives changes in which of the two?

The difference between weather and climate is that weather is the state of the
atmosphere at a certain time, while the climate is the weather in a long period of
time. Global warming mistly drives changes in the climate.

17. Describe how Earth balances energy it receives from the sun.

30% is reflected back to space and 70% is absorbed by the earths atmosphere. Earth also
releases heat into space that some gets trapped in greenhouse gases to keep the planet
warm.
