Ordering Fractions Explained

To order fractions, compare them by converting to decimals or using equivalent denominators. Improper fractions should be converted to mixed fractions, and with negative fractions, the closer to zero, the larger the value. When comparing fractions with the same denominator, the larger numerator indicates a larger fraction, and vice versa for the same numerator with different denominators.

24/12/24 Ordering Fractions

• When you want to order fractions, you must first compare

them:

(a) Convert them into decimals.

(b) Rewrite them as fractions with equivalent
denominators.
• For improper fractions, always turn them into mixed fractions
before ordering or comparing them.
• With negative fractions, remember that the closer a number
is to zero, the bigger it is.
• When the denominators are the same, the larger the
numerator the larger the fraction.
• When the numerators are the same, the larger the
denominator the smaller the fraction.

• Focus when writing the whole number in a mixed fraction.
