Assignment 1
Assignment 1
Problem 1:
Sketch simple icons to represent the following operations to appear on a digital camera
screen:
Fix red-eye
Problem 2:
Design simple calculator application for kids, use icons to represent the following basic
operations and add gender change option change.
Problem 3:
How might you use the notion of reward in interface design to increase the positive
emotional response of users? Can you find any examples of this?
Problem 4:
Here computer input devices that you are aware of (joystick, light pen, touchscreen,
trackball, eyegaze, dataglove, etc.) and note down how each has different attributes that
support certain forms of interaction. You ought to know a little about all of these devices - if
you do not, research them.
Problem 5:
Pick one of the following scenarios, and choose a suitable combination of input and output
devices to best support the intended interaction. It may help to identify typical users or
classes of user, and identify how the devices chosen support these people in their tasks.
Explain the major problems that the input and output devices solve.
2. Word processor for blind people: A word processor for blind users is needed, which can also
be operated by sighted people. It has to support the standard set of word-processing tasks.
Problem 6:
Find two examples of user interfaces, one that you consider a good design and one that you
consider a bad design. Note that the good design does not have to be uniformly good, since
you may discover problems with it on closer inspection. Likewise, the bad design does not
have to be uniformly bad. Probably the most interesting examples will be mixed.
Your interfaces might be desktop software, web applications, smartphone apps, consumer
devices, car dashboards, building entrances, traffic intersections, shower controls, etc.
• Analyze its good and bad points of usability with reference to all three dimensions of
usability discussed in lecture:
• learnability
• efficiency
• safety
• you may discuss other aspects of usability if you have space and consider them
important
