Animals That
Lay Eggs
Some animals lay eggs to have babies. Birds like
chickens, ducks, and penguins lay eggs in nests
and keep them warm until the babies hatch.
Reptiles such as snakes, turtles, and lizards also
lay eggs, often hiding them in sand or soil. Fish
and frogs lay their eggs in water, and the babies
grow and swim when they hatch. Most mammals
don’t lay eggs, but the platypus and echidna are
special—they do! Laying eggs is one way animals
bring new life into the world, and each kind of
animal has its own way of keeping the eggs safe.
What is
Incubation?
Incubation means keeping eggs warm so
the baby animals inside can grow and
hatch. Birds like chickens and ducks sit
on their eggs to keep them cozy. This
helps the baby grow inside the shell.
Reptiles and other animals may leave
their eggs in warm places like sand or
soil.
What is
Hatching?

Hatching is when a baby animal comes out of

its egg. After the egg has been kept warm
during incubation, the baby inside is ready to
break the shell. Some animals, like birds, use a
special part of their beak called an egg tooth to
crack the shell open. Reptiles, like turtles and
snakes, also hatch from eggs, often buried in
warm sand. Frogs hatch from jelly-like eggs in
water and start life as tadpoles.
Lifecycle Of A Butterfly
The life cycle of a butterfly is a process
of complete metamorphosis with four
stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. It
begins when an adult butterfly lays an
egg, which hatches into a caterpillar
(larva). The caterpillar eats and grows,
then forms a chrysalis (pupa). Inside the
chrysalis, it transforms into an adult
butterfly, which then emerges to fly,
feed, and reproduce, starting the cycle
over again.
