    CLAVIJO AND ITS CASTLE

    The castle is a temoin of resistence agains Arab invasions in the Middel Age. Saint Jacques cross is in one of its round turret. The legend says that Apostle Saint Jacques appeared riding a white horse and holding a sword to help christians against invasors.

    Every year the invasors demanded from the villages of our region 100 young girls (virgins) for them as a tribute, what made our ancestors furious.

    They are considered the Spanish language cradle In the middle: Gonzalo de Berceo, the first writer known in Spanish language.

    THE GLOSSES
    The first words in Spanish and Basque language. The manuscript dates about 970 A.D. They were found in a church book. The glosses are the comments in Spanish and Basque that priests wrote on the right side of the page with texts in latin to use them when preding. On the right: Spanish Language Room in Yuso Monastry.     EZCARAY
    Typical architecture in streets and main square. At the bottom Church and ski facilities.

    Ezcaray: On feet of Demanda chain of mountains lies Ezcary, an almost 2.000 inhabitants village, that receives summer tourists as well as winter tourists. In its closest mountains there is a ski station. Its landscapes are beautiful and peaceful.

    VINEYARDS IN LA RIOJA ALTA

    The fertile land is cultivated with special care and provides excellent products: fruits, vegetables, grapes for wine (Rioja wine, considered one of the best in the world) and many others.

    HARO
    On the left, The Town Hall. On 29th June takes place, in the mountains

    close to Haro, La Batalla del vino (the Wine-battle), in which people usually throw some wine to each other, as if it were a battle, using the most original devices. Haro was in the nineteenth century the first place in Spain, at the same time that in Madrid, that got the electricity equipment. From that time comes the expression: We are near Haro, as we can see its lights .

    Haro: La Rioja Alta capital. In Haro you can find in the Barrio de la Estacin (railway station area) the biggest amount of centenary wine cellars all over the world.

    THE GRAPES ARE ALREADY RIPE. IT IS HARVEST TIME

    WINE IS PUT INTO OAK BARRELS TO BECOME CRIANZA, RESERVA AND GRAN RESERVA (Juan Alcorta winecellar in Logroo. It contains 70.000 oak barrels)

    WINE MUST BE WATCHED OVER and tasted.
