29 Most of the compounds of transition metals are coloured in solid orin solution
states. The colour of the transition metal ion arises from the excitation of
electrons from the d- orbitals of lower energy to the d d-orbitals
orbitals of higher energy.
The energy required for d--dd electron excitation is available in visible rangeThe
range
colour observed corresponds to the complementary colour of the light absorbed.
The transition metals which have completely filled orbitals are colourless as the
excitation of electrons is not [Link] transition metals which have
completely empty d- orbitals are also colourless. In certain oxysalts of transition
metals like KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7, there are no unpaired electrons at central atom
but they are deep in colour. The colours of th
these
ese compounds is due to charge
transfrer spectrum. For example in MnO 4- an electron is transferred momentarily

[Link]
henol is the trivial name for monohydroxy benzene.
The o- , m- and p-cresols are monohydroxy toluenes andare distinct in their
properties and the reactions from the isomeric side chain hydroxy compounds,
benzyl alcohol, which is a typical aromatic alcohol. Simple monohyric phenols are
either corrosive liquids or low melting solids. The dihydricandtrihydric phenols

The monohydric compounds are slightly soluble in water but are miscible with
organic solvents.
The water solubility increases and solubility in organic solvents decreases with
the introduction of additional hydroxyl groups.
