Forging

Forging

It is a manufacturing process where metal is pressed or squeezed under great pressure into high strength parts known as forgings

Advantages of Forging Process

1.
2.

3.

4.

5.

Forgings are stronger. Forging refines defects from cast ingots or continuous cast bar Forgings are more reliable, less costly Forgings offer better response to heat treatment Bulk Production

Types of Forging process

Based on Application of Heat 1.COLD FORGING 2.HOT FORGING Based on Nature of Die 1.OPEN DIE FORGING 2.CLOSED DIE FORGING

Forging Process

A Forge shop can produces Forgings of metal - ferrous or non-ferrous.

Metals are processed by Bar cutting & Forging

Forging Process HOT Forging

OPEN DIE FORGING

- Hot Metal piece is hammered between Flat , circular or V shaped dies - When the part is too large & Quantity is small

- Complex shape & size ( without die)

Closed Die Forging Process

- Hot Metal piece is hammered between one or series of dies that enclose the work piece on all sides. - Series of dies used because forming solid metal in a single stage is difficult - Usually carried out at elevated temperatures for enhanced ductility

Defects in Forging
A defect is a flaw in a component in a typical Process, but inevitable one

Defects in Forging

Carbon steel : A105 No alloy elements Alloy steel : F11 / F22
Alloy Elements - 0-20% of alloy elements

Stainless steel : F316,F316L,F304.

Cr > 11% , Alloy more than 10%
