ZIGBEE
Zigbee is a technological standard created by
Zigbee alliance based on IEEE 802.15.4
standard.
Designed for control and automation.
Allows wireless two way communication that
travels distance and handles sensors that
come across.
Low cost, low power consuming technology
for WPAN’s.
SPECIFICATIONS
Typical range 50m(5-500m based on
environment).
Data rates of 250 kbps (@2.4 GHz), 40 kbps
(@ 915 MHz), and 20 kbps (@868 MHz).
Low power (battery life multi-month to years).
Fully hand-shaking protocol for transfer
reliability.
Multiple topologies: star, peer-to-peer, mesh.
Addressing space of up to:
- 18,450,000,000,000,000,000 devices (64 bit
IEEE address) , 65,535 networks
TRAFFIC TYPES
Designed to handle data for control and
automation and hence is different from Wi-Fi
or Bluetooth.
ZigBee addresses 3 typical traffic types
3.Periodic data
4.Intermittent data
5.Repetitive data
ARCHITECTURE
Uses layers
(standardized sets of
solutions) designed as
to enable one to one
communication within
the network or to a
network of higher level
and ultimately an
uplink to the Web.
The first two layers are
defined by IEEE
802.15.4 and higher
layers by Zigbee
LAYERS
PHY physical layer accommodates high levels of
integration for simplicity and cost effectiveness.
The MAC media access control layer permits use
of several topologies to work with large numbers
of devices.
NWK Layer
4.associates or dissociates devices using the
network coordinator.
5.routes frames to their intended destination.
6.responsible for starting a new network and
assigning an address to newly associated devices.
Layers
NWK layer supports multiple network
topologies including star, cluster tree, and
mesh.
APS sub-layer's responsibilities include
3.maintenance of tables that enable matching
between two devices and communication
among them.
4.Identifies other devices that operate in the
operating space of any device.
FRAME STRUCTURE
Key BENEFITS
Ultra-low power consumption by conserving
power of slave nodes i.e. for most of the time, a
slave device is in deep-sleep mode and wakes up
only for a fraction of a second to confirm its
presence in the network.
MAC sub layer specifies four security services:
3.maintains a list of trusted devices.
4.Data encryption.
5.Frame integrity to protect data from being
modified by others
6.sequential freshness to reject data frames that
have been replayed.
CONCLUSION
ZIGBEE form the basis of future wireless
sensors, offering data reliability, long battery
life, lower system costs and good range
through flexible networking.
Anything in the home that uses electricity can
be put on the home network and commanded.
Zigbee is a wireless control that simply works.
