Today we are going to
learn
a little about Romanian
language.
Where is spoken?

Is native to Romania and
Republic of Moldova, where
around 24 million people speak
it.

As a minority is spoken in: Serbia, Ukraine,
Hungary, Bulgaria and Greece.

Due to Romanian diaspora, Romanian language is
spoken around the world, but mostly in Italy,
Spain, Germany, United States, Canada, Russia,
UK, Portugal and Israel.
Dialects
In a general sense, we can understand by
Romanian 4 different languages or dialects:

Daco-Romanian
Aromanian
Megleno-Romanian
Istro-Romanian
Dialects
Daco-Romanian or Romanian has also dialects
or sub-dialects:
In the southern part: the Wallachian
subdialect
In the northern part: the Moldavian
subdialect, the Banat subdialect, and
Transylvanian varieties.

Historical Family
language
Romanian belongs to Romance language, to the
Italic branch of the Indo-European language
family.

Romanian has Slavic influence and also Greek,
Hungarian, Turkish, German and Romany, as
well as French, Italian and English influence.

Greek:
folos < felos "use",
buzunar < buzunra "pocket"
German:
cartof < Kartoffel "potato",
bere < Bier "beer"

Aspects of the language
The alphabet is based on the Latin script with
five additional letters: , , , , .

Difference between:
a A /a/ mare "big", "sea"
// mas "table"
// cnd "when"

The letters , and , have the same sound.
The difference is grammatical:
we use , at the principle of the word,

nceput "principle", "started",

and in the midle of the word,

cnd "when".
