BACKGROUND
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is an

integrated power plant equipment manufacturer

and one of the largest engineering and
manufacturing companies in India in terms of
turnover.
Established on 29 August 1956 & Production
started from 6 November 1960, BHEL ushered in
the indigenous Heavy Electrical Equipment
industry in India.

It is one of the only 7 mega Public Sector

Undertakings (PSUs) of India clubbed under the

esteemed 'Maharatna' status.
It is engaged in the design, engineering,
manufacture,
construction,
testing,
commissioning and servicing of a wide range of
products and services for the core sectors of the
economy, viz. Power, Transmission, Industry,
Transportation, Renewable Energy, Oil & Gas
and Defence.

The wide network of BHEL consists of:

(a) 17 Manufacturing divisions
(b) 2 Repair units
(c) 8 Service centres
(d) 4 Regional offices
(e) 6 Overseas offices
(f) 6 Joint ventures
(g) 15 Regional Marketing Centers
(h) 4 Power Sector Region Centers:

PROJECT ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT

Project Engineering Management (PEM) Division is

BHELs power plant System Integrator, a nodal agency

providing total engineering solutions for conventional
thermal and gas based power projects and
conventional island of nuclear power plant, enabling
BHEL to offer complete Engineering, Procurement and
Construction (EPC) services for power projects.

PEM coordinates with all the agencies

involved in the setting up of the power plant

and smoothly integrates all the requirements
of manufacturing, fabrication, erection,
commissioning, operations and maintenance,
right at the engineering and design stage.

MECHANICAL AUXILIARY
MAUX is responsible for various activities

relating to proposal & contracts engineering

including engineering development for various
bought-out equipment/packages/systems as well
as support in Vendor registration as described
hereinafter.
Max is divided into 3 sections, each dealing with
different BOIs
I. Water Chemistry, Environment Engineering.
II. Material handling and fuel oil handling.
III. Plant facilities such as ventilation system

MECHANICAL SYSTEAM
ENGINEERING(MSE)
Main activities of the Department are:
Power cycle system engineering.
Thermal calculations and performance

guarantee (PG) test procedure & computation

method.
Water system engineering.
Procurement of Bought out items, as applicable
to various systems being engineered by MSE
deptt
Standardization and development activities.
Maintenance of quality system documents viz;

MECHANICAL PIPING
LAYOUT(MPL)
Key functions performed by MPL are summed

up as under:Development of conceptual plot plan layout.

Development of main equipment plan layout.
Equipment layout of turbine hall at various floors.
Layout of critical piping (main steam, hot reheat,
cold reheat, HP/LP bypass system and feed
water system) .
Static analysis of critical piping.

RANKINE CYCLE
The Rankine cycle is an

idealised thermodynamic
cycle of a heat engine that
converts heat into
mechanical work. The heat
is supplied externally to a
closed loop, which usually
uses water as the working
fluid.
The efficiency of the
Rankine cycle is limited by
the high heat of vaporization
of the working fluid.

THE 4 PROCESSES IN THE

RANKINE CYCLE

There are four processes in the Rankine cycle.

These states are identified by numbers (in brown) in

the above T-s diagram.

Process 1-2: The working fluid is pumped from low

to high pressure. As the fluid is a liquid at this stage

the pump requires little input energy.
Process 2-3: The high pressure liquid enters a
boiler where it is heated at constant pressure by an
external heat source to become a dry saturated
vapour. The input energy required can be easily
calculated using mollier diagram or h-s chart or
enthalpy-entropy chart also known as steam tables.
Process 3-4: The dry saturated vapour expands

through a turbine, generating power. This decreases

the temperature and pressure of the vapour, and some
condensation may occur. The output in this process
can be easily calculated using the Enthalpy-entropy
chart or the steam tables.

Process 4-1: The wet vapour then enters a

condenser where it is condensed at a constant

pressure to become a saturated liquid.
In an ideal Rankine cycle the pump and turbine
would be isentropic, i.e., the pump and turbine
would generate no entropy and hence maximize
the net work output. Processes 1-2 and 3-4
would be represented by vertical lines on the T-S
diagram and more closely resemble that of the
Carnot cycle. The Rankine cycle shown here
prevents the vapor ending up in the superheat
region after the expansion in the turbine, which
reduces the energy removed by the condensers.
