It is a way of managing the environment,
based on the Mori world view. A kaitiaki is a
guardian. This can be a person or group that
cares for an area such as a lake or forest.
Ngai Tahu have lived with whales for over
1000 years. We intend to live with them for
another 1000 years, whale watch increases
peoples understanding of whales and their
place in the environment, the business

KAITIAKITANGA Guardianship of
resources Tribes are restoring their environment and
culture, and using traditional ideas in the modern
world In the past, people followed traditional practices when they
were hunting, fishing, growing or finding food. These helped
them to care for the environment.
They included:
temporary bans (rhui) on taking food from an area
using the lunar calendar (maramataka) to decide when to
plant and harvest
taking only what was needed
hunting and fishing only for food, not as sport
using bird snares at the right time for example, not when
the birds were breeding.

Ngi Tahu tribe are guardians of pounamu (greenstone) in the South Island
The Te Rarawa people are working to save the kkupa (New Zealand pigeon)..

Puawaitanga - the best possible outcome is

sought on integrated goals, measuring success against
multiple returns.

Whale Watch Kaikoura:

profits also the goals of creating local employment &
raising awareness of sustainable used of resources,
especially reverence for the natural world.

quality product and business that lasts so local jobs
are safe and had a vision about helping the local
environment recover it strength, as well.

customs, systems, processes and appropriate behaviours.
Similar to a mission statement.

company, Whale
Watch cherishes the
twin values of
hospitality to visitors
and reverence for the
natural world.

Putaki Origin or reason for being, similar to

Vision Statement.
The reason the business was created,
brought into being.
Businesses can be formed to hold or
manage resources sustainably.

Businesses can be created to

develop an idea and make jobs
and profits for the developers.
Many maori businesses focus on the
triple bottom line to develop jobs profits
and foster the maori ways of life&
sustainable use of resources
Marcus Solomon - Ngai Tahu talking
about sustainability

Turanga is the legal framework of a company e.g.

limited liability however in a Maori context this is complicated
by dual ownership of communal assets e.g. land
Maori tribal groups may set up businesses to
manage their land for profits but also may set other
aims for them around sustainable use of bush.
Some firms may collectively own the farm or
business and make decision limited by their
cooperative charter.
Your business was set up as partnership so all
bring skills into the idea and sharing out any profits
made when they happened?

Did you have the

discussion about
how the profits
were to be split or
used for some
other thing like
20% going to help
the local food
bank.

Rangitaratanga leadership, authority

or management. Does your company use a
hierarchical/flat/matrix structure to make
decisions and solve problems
Who owns the idea, and what is your
ownership structures. How are choices
made, were there rules about how decisions
were decided by vote or by the CEO.
Self determination free to make own
decisions especially about future direction of
growth and marketing changes.
