Charging system

The main components of charging system are

Alternator
Voltage regulator (which is usually mounted inside the
alternator)
Alternator Drive belt
Battery
The purpose of the charging system is to
maintain the charge in the vehicle's battery, and
to provide the main source of electrical energy
while the engine is running.
Alternator Voltage
A car alternator needs to be putting out at
least 13-14 volts (ideally between 13.8 and
14.2 volts) to effectively charge a 12 volt car
battery.
If the alternator is putting out too much
voltage (15+ volts), it is likely your battery acid
will boil over out of the battery.
Requirements of good charging
system
Operate at idle speed.
Supply constant voltage under all conditions.
Have an efficient power-to-weight ratio.
Be reliable, quiet, and have resistance to
contamination.
Require low maintenance
Provide an indication of correct operation.
Alternator voltage > 13.8V - Alternator supplies voltage
to all electrical load and parallely charges battery
Alternator voltage < 13.8V - Battery sdupplies current
to load
Power required by the electrical components in
the vehicle supplied by the alternator
Voltage regulator (Maintain constant voltage)

To prevent the vehicle battery from being overcharged the

regulated system voltage should be kept below the gassing voltage
of the lead-acid battery
Charger warning light

Warning light
should be OFF
when engine is
running.
Otherwise
there is a
problem with
alternator
Alternator Drive Belt
Alternator belt which connects all the
pulleys
Requirements of the
vehicle battery
The vehicle battery is used as a source of energy in the vehicle when the engine, and
hence the alternator is not running.

Battery provide power storage and be able to supply it quickly enough to operate
the vehicle starter motor.

To allow the use of parking lights for a reasonable time.

To allow operation of accessories when the engine is not running.

To act as a swamp to damp out fluctuations of system voltage.

To allow dynamic memory and alarm systems to remain active when the vehicle is
left for a period of time.

Temperature range should be in the region of 30 to 70 C.

Choosing the correct
battery
1. The ability to power the starter to enable
minimum starting speed under very cold
conditions.
2. The expected use of the battery for running
accessories when the engine is not running.
