ASKING QUESTIONS

Asking Questions
There are four main ways in English to form a
question.
By making your voice rise at the end of a sentence.
By beginning the sentence with a form of DO, DOES,
DID.
By placing the Linking Verb or Auxiliary Verb at the
beginning of the sentence (HAS/HAVE, HAD, CAN,
WILL, IS, AM, ARE, WAS, WERE)
By beginning the sentence with a question word
( WHERE, WHEN, WHY, WHAT, HOW, WHO or WHICH)
By making your voice rise at the end of a sentence.

You are tired.


The man is sick.
You did not do your homework.
Andi is absent today.
By beginning the sentence with a form of DO, DOES, DID.

You have a nice car.


Do you have a nice car?
Mary takes a nap every day.
Does Mary take a nap every day?
Tom rode his bicycle to campus.
Did Tom ride his bicycle to campus?
By placing the Linking Verb or Auxiliary Verb at the beginning of the
sentence (HAS/HAVE, HAD, CAN, WILL, IS, AM, ARE, WAS, WERE)

Laura has gone to the store.


Has Laura gone to the store?
The old garbage truck had crashed into the wall.
Had the old garbage truck crashed into the wall?
The ball in Times Square will fall at midnight.
Will the ball in Times Square fall at midnight?
Gene can play the guitar.
Can Gene play the guitar?
By beginning the sentence with a question word ( WHERE, WHEN, WHY,
WHAT, HOW, WHO or WHICH)

What time is it?


How much is that bag in the window?
Where are you going?
Why are the police coming?
Which dogs were chasing the car?
How did the accident happen?
Who broke the window?
EXERCISE
Write yes/no questionts from the following
questions.
1. The little boy ran to school
Did the little boy run to school?
2. The movie starts at seven oclock on Sunday
3. They have homework for tomorrow
4. Peter can operate computer seriously
5. There are twelve cups of sugar in the fudge
6. Charlete understands the lesson very well
7. There is two spoonful of sugar in the fudge
8. I put your school books on the table yesterday
9. It was a horrible lesson for me.
Put the correct wh-questionts to the
following sentences.
1. The little boy ran to school

Where did the little boy run? To school
2. The movie starts at seven oclock on Sunday

HOMEWORK
Change the following statements into yes/no
questions.

6. Ruth wanted those red flowers.
Make up questions that would get you the
information found in the following statements.
1. The play starts at eight o'clock.
2. Jack took his sons to the ball game.
3. Martha likes the red convertible, not the
blue one.
4. Most students enter the school by the main
doors.
5. The carpenter needed twenty nails to finish
the job.
