Line Balancing Algorithms

The document discusses line balancing algorithms. The objective of line balancing is to distribute the total workload as evenly as possible among workers. This can be expressed mathematically as minimizing either (wTs - Twc) or the sum of (Ts - Tsi) for all workers i, subject to the constraints that the sum of element times Tek must be less than or equal to the service time Ts and that all precedence requirements are met. The variables represent work content time, number of workers, service time, and time to perform elements.

Line balancing algorithms
The objective in line balancing is to distribute the total workload on the assembly line as
evenly as possible among the workers. This objective can be expressed mathematically in two
alternative but equivalent forms:
Minimize (wTs Twc) or Minimize
=( )
Subject to: 1) = and 2) all precedence requirements are obeyed.
Twc = work content time (min/pc) (total time of all work elements that must be performed on
the line to make one unit of the product)
w = number of workers on the line
Tsi = service time (min)
Ts = maximum allowable service time (min)
Tek = time to perform work elements k (min)
