    STORY OUTLINE
    CAT IN THE RAIN

    An American
    couple are in Italy
    on tour. Their hotel
    room faces the sea.
    It also faces the
    public garden and
    the war monument.
    It is raining.
    Right under the
    window of their
    room, there is a
    cat under one of
    the green
    tables. The
    tables are wet
    due to rain. The
    cat tries not to
    get wet.
    The wife wants the
    cat. So, she decides
    to go and get it. Her
    husband George
    offers to get it. But
    she says she will
    get it herself. So,
    George continues
    reading. He tells
    her not to get wet.
    On the way out, the
    American wife meets
    the hotel owner. He
    is a very tall man. He
    is very polite and
    likes to serve her.
    She likes his old face
    and big hands. She
    also likes the way he
    treats his customers.
    It starts raining
    heavily. Therefore,
    the hotel owner
    sends his maid
    with an umbrella
    so that the
    American wife
    wouldnt get wet.
    The American
    wife looks under
    the table, but the
    cat is not to be
    found. The maid
    asks her whether
    she lost anything.
    The American
    wife says she saw
    a cat under the
    table. The maid is
    amused.
    But when the
    American wife
    says that she
    wanted a kitty in
    English, the maid
    becomes serious.
    She says they
    must get in and
    not get wet.
    On reaching the room,
    George asks her about
    the cat. The wife tells
    him that it was not to
    be found. She then
    looks at her hair in the
    mirror and says she
    will grow her hair.
    George says she looks
    good this way. But she
    says she is tired of
    looking like a boy.
    The American wife
    then states that
    she will have a
    cat. She will have
    her own silver and
    eat at the dining
    table with candles.
    George feels bored
    and asks her to
    shut up.
    At that time,
    there is a knock
    at the door. The
    door opens and
    the maid brings a
    tortoise shell cat.
    She says that the
    owner gifted it to
    her.
