    CHAPTER 3: LANGUAGE AND ETHNIC GROUP

    What is an ethnic group?

    An ethnic group is a speech community.

    It refers to people who speak a particular language.

    These people follow a particular culture.

    BLACK AMERICANS (AFRICAN AMERICANS)

    WHITE AMERICANS

    The judges could not find out if the speakers were Black Americans or
    White Americans.

    Reasons:
    Black Americans who lived in White American areas spoke like White
    Americans.

    White Americans who lived Black American areas spoke like Black
    Americans.

    Inference:
    Language is not the only characteristic of a race or culture.

    A person can speak a language or dialect depending on the surroundings.
