WATER PROOFING
 Water-proof or water-resistant describes objects relatively unaffected
by water
 It is essential to water proof a structure to prevent the seepage of water
for its durability. We provide water proofing solutions for basements,
sunken portions, roofs, terrace gardens and expansion joints etc. We
deal with several ways of water proofing depending on a structure,
site and conditions viz.: PVC , NEOPRENE , EPDM ,
POLYURETHANE etc.
 “Any system or material which helps in preventing ingress of water
into structures can be broadly termed as waterproofing.
 Waterproofing is defined as treatment of surface or structure to
prevent the passage of water under the hydrostatic pressure
WATER PROOFING

 Building water-proofing is a process which is designed to prevent

water from penetrating a building.
 Usually extensive waterproofing measures are added to a building
at the time of construction, to provide moisture control from the
start
 Waterproofing may also be done after a building is built, to
address problems as they emerge or as part of a building retrofit.
Problems caused by water
 Rotting of timber structures and finishes such as floor joints, beams, floors,
studs, skirting, architraves and frames.
 Corrosion of metals such as steel reinforcement in concrete, steel beams,
lintels, metal door frames etc.
 Swelling of plasterboards and the subsequent debonding of ceramic tiles.
 Electrical hazards causing the possible short circuit of lighting and power
points.
 The blistering of paint.
 Unsightly deterioration of the building facade.
 Health problems due to dampness, which may lead to respiratory problems.
 Rotting carpet.
Source & Causes of leakages
Sources of leakages
 Subsoil water rising by capillary action.
 Cracks in external plaster
 Vegetation growth
 Separation gaps between partition wall and beams and the columns.
 From expansion joints
Causes of leakages
 Defective structural design
 Use of poor quality construction material
 Porous structures
 Improper methodology of construction
 Improper slopes on top surfaces.
Water proofing
 Water proofing is done in various parts of the building which include-
1.WC
2.Bathrooms
3.Terrace
4.Roofs and Chejjas
5.Basement, swimming pools, underground ducts.
6. Under ground and overhead water tanks.
7. Terrace Gardening

 Water-proofing maintains the appearance of the building and increases the

life of the structure.
Different types of water proofing
Compound are:-
 EPD Membrane
 PVC Membrane
 Polyurethane Membrane
 Neoprene Membrane
 Butyl Membrane
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer membrane)
 EPDM is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane (ethylene
propylene diene terpolymer) widely used in low-slope buildings in the United
States and worldwide
 Its two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, are derived from oil and
natural gas.
 EPDM is available in both black and white, and is sold a broad variety of
widths, ranging from 7.5 feet to fifty feet, and in two thicknesses, 45 and 60
mils.
 EPDM can be installed either fully adhered, mechanically attached or
ballasted, with the seams of the roofing system sealed with liquid adhesives or
specially formulated tape.
 This is a rubber membrane sheet which can be easily spread over the area. It
provides very high flexibility and durability
PVC MEMBRANE
 A high resistance to puncture and impact.
 This membrane is fiberglass reinforced, offering exceptional
dimensional stability and a low coefficient of thermal
expansion.
 By fully encapsulating the fiberglass reinforcement, there is no
risk of delamination or water wicking.
 This is a stable, flexible membrane providing high mechanical
strength.
 Good low-temperature flexibility and high-temperature tolerance.
POLYURETHANE MEMBRANES
 These are high performance, versatile membranes which are acrylic
based providing excellent flexibility, high durability and very good
finish.
 Initially a dry and clean surface is prepared for its application and
then the membrane is spread over the area.
NEOPRENE MEMBRANE

 Neoprene Membrane is a self-curing material used as a protection

layer over RubberGard EPDM Membrane.
 The Neoprene is used to protect EPDM roofing systems from rooftop
contaminants (i.e., grease, animal fats).
 Neoprene must be installed in accordance with current Firestone
RubberGard specifications.
Method of Application:

 RubberGard Neoprene must be installed in accordance with

current RubberGard specifications, details and workmanship
requirements.
 Neoprene may be used to tie-in RubberGard roofs to existing built-
up roofs, although the tie-ins are not warranted by Firestone.
 Neoprene may be used in conjunction with grease catch pans to
protect RubberGard roofing system from grease/oil exposure.
Consult Firestone for specific precautions and application when
contaminants will come in contact with the RubberGard system.
 Use of heat guns during cold weather will improve workability of
membrane, but a wide nozzle should be used and care should be
taken not localize heat, as a hole in the membrane can result.
Butyl
 The Elastoproof Butyl Waterproofing Tape is a multi-purpose self
 adhesive sealing band designed for flashing and detailing a variety of
 surfaces. With outstanding adhesion properties of the butyl rubber
 backing, the Elastoproof Butyl Tape is ideal for sealing internal and
 external surfaces that require protection against moisture ingress,
 vibration and flexing.
 The Elastoproof Butyl Tape provides an instant seal to the surface it is
 applied to, avoiding down time for drying or curing. Ideally suited for
 waterproofing, roofing and general building applications the Butyl
 Waterproofing Tape is designed to be finished over with Gripset
 adhesives, membranes, coatings, mortars, adhesives and renders
Butyl Features and Benefits

 * Peel and stick application

 * Primerless application (on dust free and stable surfaces)
 * Excellent adhesive properties over a variety of surfaces
 * Easy workability and deformability over substrates
 * Excellent thermal stability
 * Flexible
 * Outstanding adhesion retention at low temperatures
 * Instant sealing properties, no drying required
 * Rupture and tear resistant
 * Solvent free and non toxic
 * Ability to cover over with Gripset coatings
 * Compatible with cement based finishes, e.g. tile adhesive, ren
 textures etc.
USES
 * Sealing roof sheet joints and lapped areas
 * Sealing wall/floor junctions
 * Flashing brickwork, gypsum, pre-cast concrete, timber and structural
 sheeting
 * Flashing galvanised and zincalume surfaces
 * Crack repairs on concrete floors before tiling, screeds, topping
SURFACE PREPARATION
 * Surfaces must be clean, smooth and dust free
 * Surfaces must be dry and free of any residual moisture
 * For any porous surface that contains surface dust or residue, prime
 or seal the substrate first
 * Rough surfaces must be levelled or smoothed
 * All metals must be free of oils, grease and wax residues. Use
 Gripset DG Degreaser to ensure surfaces are free of residues before
application commerces.
