wireless sensor network (WSN)

definition: A wireless sensor network is a group of


specialized transducers with a communications
infrastructure for monitoring and recording conditions at
diverse locations. Commonly monitored parameters are
temperature, humidity, pressure, wind direction and speed,
illumination intensity, vibration intensity, sound intensity,
power-line voltage, chemical concentrations, pollutant levels
and vital body functions.
A sensor network consists of multiple detection stations
called sensor nodes, each of which is small, lightweight and
portable. Every sensor node is equipped with a transducer,
microcomputer, transceiver and power source. The transducer
generates electrical signals based on sensed physical effects
and phenomena. The microcomputer processes and stores the
sensor output. The transceiver receives commands from a
central computer and transmits data to that computer. The
power for each sensor node is derived from a battery.
Characteristics of Wireless Sensor
Network
The characteristics of WSN include the following.
• The consumption of Power limits for nodes with
batteries
• Capacity to handle with node failures
• Some mobility of nodes and Heterogeneity of nodes
• Scalability to large scale of distribution
• Capability to ensure strict environmental conditions
• Simple to use
• Cross-layer design
• Simplicity of use
Advantages of Wireless Sensor Networks

It avoids a lot of wiring
2. It can accommodate new devices at any time
3. It's flexible to go through physical partitions
4. It can be accessed through a centralized monitor
5.Implemetation pricing is cheap.
disadvantages of Wireless Sensor Networks

1. Less secure because hackers can enter the access point and
get all the information.
2. Lower speed compared to a wired network.
3.More complex to configure than a wired network
4.Easily affected by surroundings (walls, micro wave , large
distances due to signal attenuation ,etc
Wireless Sensor Networks Applications
Ad Hoc Network

•definition: An ad hoc network is a network that is composed


of individual devices communicating with each other directly
• An ad-hoc network is a local area network (LAN) that is built
spontaneously as devices connect. Instead of relying on a base
station to coordinate the flow of messages to each node in the
network, the individual network nodes forward packets to and
from each other. In Latin, ad hoc literally means "for this,"
meaning "for this special purpose" and also, by extension,
improvised or impromptu.
The disadvantage of ad hoc network are
• They are weak signal when compare with wireless network which use
router to function properly.
• The communication range is very small when compare with
wireless network.
• They are not secured.
• Low area coverage.
