COCAINE
COCAINE
 Cocaine (INN)
(benzoylmethylecgonine,
an ecgonine derivative) is
a crystalline tropane alkaloid that
is obtained from the leaves of the
coca plant. The name comes
from "coca" and the alkaloid
suffix -ine, forming cocaine. It is
a stimulant, an appetite
suppressant, and a topical
anesthetic. Biologically, cocaine
acts as a serotonin–
norepinephrine–dopamine
reuptake inhibitor, also known as a
triple reuptake inhibitor (TRI). It
is addictive because of its effect
on the mesolimbic reward
pathway.
COCAINE

 Scientific name : ERYTHROXYLON

COCA

 Street name : bazooka, candy,

crack, lady, star dust, bazucos, C-
Dust, flake, rock, gin, snow, blance,
coke, koks, speedball
Appearance. of Cocaine
Routes of Administration
 Oral
 Many users rub the powder
along the gum line, or onto
a cigarette filter which is
then smoked, which numbs
the gums and teeth –
hence the colloquial
names of "numbies",
"gummers" or "cocoa puffs"
for this type of
administration.
Insufflation
 Nasal insufflation (known
colloquially as "snorting,"
"sniffing," or "blowing") is the
most common method of
ingestion of recreational
powdered cocaine in the
Western world. The drug
coats and is absorbed
through the mucous
membranes lining
the sinuses.
Injection
Drug injection provides the highest
blood levels of drug in the shortest
amount of time. Subjective effects not
commonly shared with other methods
of administration include a ringing in
the ears moments after injection
(usually when in excess of 120
milligrams) lasting 2 to 5 minutes
including tinnitus & audio distortion.
Suppository
Little research has been focused
on the suppository (anal or
vaginal insertion) method of
administration, also known as
"plugging". This method of
administration is commonly
administered using an oral
syringe.
Inhalation
 Inhalation or smoking is one of the several
means cocaine is administered. Cocaine is
smoked by inhaling the vapor by
sublimating solid cocaine by heating. In a
2000 Brookhaven National Laboratory
medical department study, based on self
reports of 32 abusers who participated in
the study,"peak high" was found at mean
of 1.4min +/- 0.5 minutes.
The short term effect
 an increasing sense of energy and alertness
 an extremely elevated mood
 a feeling of supremacy
On the other hand, some people describe
other feelings tagging along with the high:
 irritability
 paranoia
 restlessness
 anxiety
The long term effect
 Heart. Cocaine is bad for the heart. Cocaine increases heart rate and blood
pressure while constricting the arteries supplying blood to the heart. The result
can be a heart attack, even in young people without heart disease. Cocaine
can also trigger a deadly abnormal heart rhythm called arrhythmia.
 Brain. Cocaine can constrict blood vessels in the brain, causing strokes. This
can happen even in young people without other risk factors for strokes.
Cocaine causes seizures and can lead to bizarre or violent behavior.
 Lungs and respiratory system. Snorting cocaine damages the nose and
sinuses. Regular use can cause nasal perforation. Smoking crack cocaine
irritates the lungs and, in some people, causes permanent lung damage.
 Gastrointestinal tract. Cocaine constricts blood vessels supplying the gut. The
resulting oxygen starvation can cause ulcers, or even perforation of the
stomach or intestines.
 Kidneys. Cocaine can cause sudden, overwhelming kidney failure through a
process called rhabdomyolysis. In people with high blood pressure, regular
cocaine use can accelerate the long-term kidney damage caused by high
blood pressure.
 Sexual function. Although cocaine has a reputation as an aphrodisiac, it
actually may make you less able to finish what you start. Chronic cocaine use
can impair sexual function in men and women. In men, cocaine can cause
delayed or impaired ejaculation.
Signs of using cocaine
include:
dilated pupils
high levels of
energy and
activity
excited,
exuberant
speech
Alcohol
alcoholic beverage
is a drink and psychoactive
drug containing ethyl alcohol, which is
commonly referred to as ethanol. Alcoholic
beverages are divided into three general
classes for taxation and regulation of
production: beers, wines, and spirits (or
distilled beverage). They are legally
consumed in most areas around the world
with over 100 countries having laws
regulating their production, sale, and
consumption.
Alcohol

Street name:
Beer, whisky, Gin, Brandy,
wine
Effects:

Sedation; impairs mental and

physical functions; increases
the risk of heart attack and
stroke.
Dangers:

Addiction; cirrhosis; brain

damage; obesity; may lead
to cancer of the esophagus,
intestines, pancreas, thyroid,
and breast.
Cigarette
Cigarette
(from the
French cigarette '"small cigar")is a small
cylinder of finely cut tobacco leaves rolled
in thin paper for smoking. The cigarette is
ignited at one end and allowed
to smoulder; its smoke is inhaled from the
other end, which is held in or to the mouth
and in some cases a cigarette holder may
be used as well. Most modern
manufactured cigarettes are filtered and
include reconstituted tobacco and
other additives.
How to avoid and to stop
How to avoid and to stop:
 Decide that you do really want to stop using drugs.
Unless you have the desire to change you will never be
able to.
 Be completely honest with yourself and others. Your
chances of recovery are not good if you cannot face
yourself and deal with confrontations from others.
 Join a website like Recovery Social network
www.recoverysocialnet.com This website has a lot of
supportive people that are also in recovery and really
want to help you stay clean. There is also a lot of great
recovery information. You can start your own profile
add pictures connect with other people in recovery,
and even start your own blog! Recovery social network
is an invaluable tool for staying clean.
 Be patient with yourself. It usually takes at least three
months before significant improvement occurs, so don't
give up if you don't get instant results.
 Remove influences that enable your drug use from your
life.
 Avoid relying on someone to stop doing drugs with you,
as he or she may not have the willingness to change.
You must be willing to stop spending time with people
who use drugs, and to avoid temptation. Learn to walk
away from those that insist on using or talking about
using in front of you. It may require you to be alone for
a while or find a whole new set of friends to hang out
with. It will shock you to find out how much healthier
your friendships will be once you are not using drugs to
smooth out the rough spots.
 Stock up on nutritious, easy-to-eat foods such as soup
to keep your strength up while clucking (going
through withdrawal). Be especially sure to focus on your
protein intake. This will help keep your blood sugar level
stable, which in turn helps keep your mood on an even
keel.
 Find a group in your local area such as Narcotics
Anonymous or SMART Recovery. It will help you deal
with the issues that come up when stopping drugs.
Narcotics Anonymous is not actually specific to
narcotics - users of all kinds of drugs, including
marijuana, attend Narcotics Anonymous. Recovering
users of all kinds are also welcome at open meetings of
Alcoholics Anonymous. SMART Recovery helps addicts
learn to abstain from drugs, alcohol, and addictive
behaviors using self-management techniques, and may
be a good alternative for people who do not feel
comfortable with 12-step groups.
 Get in touch with a reliable friend who does not take
drugs, if you have one. Ask him or her to stay with you
to help out while you go through the worst of your
withdrawal.
 If you feel you cannot deal with withdrawal by yourself,
then see a doctor or go to a hospital emergency room.
 Write down a list of things you enjoyed doing before
you started using drugs or things you've been
interested in doing that you haven't done yet. Drugs
have been a big part of your life and it will be easier
for you if you plan ahead to fill the void that their
absence will create.
 Identify your triggers, which are people, places, things,
events, activities, emotions, times, dates etc., that
make you think of using; therefore placing you at a
higher risk of using. After you identify your triggers,
avoid them.
 Identify your relapse warning signs, which are changes in
your behaviors and/or attitude that signal a chance that you
are close to using.
 Educate yourself on the dangers to your mind and body.
 Find a support system. Attend AA/NA, Self-support systems
have been proven to be helpful for those that are in
recovery. Other forms of support are family and friends that
currently are not using.
 Make a list of health goals and read it every day.
 Develop a crisis plan.
 Develop and use positive self talk.
 Find healthy activities to replace drug usage.
 Focus on your health and taking care of your family.
 Realize that you are not the only person struggling with this.
