6. Propose solutions.
7. Stay on topic.
1. READING ABOUT THE TOPIC

It is important that you have substantially read

materials related to your topic. It is difficult and
pointless to join a group discussion without the
knowledge of the subject matter being discussed.
Group members are expected to contribute ideas
for the success of the discussion.
2. CHOOSING A FORMAT FOR DISCUSSION

Having an appropriate format for a group

discussion can efficiently lead to a desired outcome.
It can also save a lot of time and effort of
participants because it provides a framework on
how the discussion should flow – begin, develop,
and end.
3. DETERMINING ROLES OF MEMBERS OF THE
DISCUSSION GROUP

All members of the group in a discussion assume

equal roles. However, to facilitate a smooth flow, a
few roles are assigned but keep in mind that the
roles will only facilitate discussion and will not
affect the contribution of ideas. Usually, a group
leader and a secretary are assigned. The leader may
act as a facilitator and a mediator but will not
undermine his role as a member in terms of idea
contribution.

TOPIC, IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM, AND PROPOSING
SOLUTIONS

The three guidelines may be synthesized using the sample

give participants in the group discussion time to research
or read materials regarding to the topic.

group discussion causes of the rampant
flooding
2. What can be done to stop
this widespread flooding in
Manila?
The group members can
decide on having only one
question that may contain the
problem in one main idea.
Definition of terms (Terms The secretary assigned by
which may come from the the group can list
readings of members) technical terms which
may arise from the
discussion so they can be
properly defined.
Brainstorm all possible Solutions
solutions the group can
think of.
Choose the best solutions 1. Can the solution be
using the following criteria: attained?
Feasibility and Effectiveness Consider:
Cost of solution:
Duration of Solution: (How
long will it take to come up
with the solution? How long
will it last?)

2. Will it not create other

problems?
Possible effects:
7. STAY ON TOPIC

If group members raise concerns that are not

relevant to the topic, they delay the entire group
from attaining the goal of the discussion. It is given
that the most group discussions require a certain
time limit. There will be little time to waste
discussing concerns irrelevant to the topic.
