Batman Premiere Shooting

Denver, Colorado
2012
+
Facts:
 The masked gunman was dressed as Joker.
 Hewas armed with a Remington shotgun
and an AR15 assault rifle and two hand
guns.
 71 people were shot, 12 of which died.
 The gunman was 24 years old.
 Heopened fire after hurling tear-gas into
the cinema.
+  The shooting incident happened just 15
minutes into the start of the midnight
premiere of The Dark Knight Rises.
 Manythought it was a publicity stunt
because he was dressed in a Joker outfit.
 Thegunman, identified as James Holmes,
was a medical school drop out, previously
studying neuroscience. He calmly
surrendered to the police without a
struggle.
+  Police detectives are working on the theory
that Holmes may have been obsessed with
the comic book character.
 Right
after the shooting, police officers
were unable to enter his apartment, as he
had booby-trapped it with explosive and
flammable devices.
 Holmes has no previous record with the
police, except a traffic ticket and no
connections with any terrorist group.
 This was carefully planned.
+  The guns used by the gunman were
purchased legally by Holmes at stores in
the Denver area in the past two months.
More than 6,000 round of ammunition were
also purchased online, according to Oates.
 Thestores where the ammunition were
bought followed the appropriate and legal
protocol on the sale of two weapons.
 Investigators
said they are confident that
Holmes acted alone.
+  Because of this incident, once again the gun
and violence debate ensued.
 Mayor Bloomberg of New York has waged a
national campaign for stricter gun laws.
 On the other hand, a member of the Rocky
Mountain Gun Owners took another view,
stating that: “Potentially, if there had been a
law-abiding citizen who had been able to
carry in the theater, its possible death toll
would have been less.”
 The
gunman was sentenced to life
imprisonment.
+  During trial, part of the evidence presented
were his diary entries, weighing if he
should attack an airport or a movie theater.
He rejected the airport because airports
have “substantial security” while the
theater he chose is “isolated” and “large”.
 Ticket sales has since lowered.
 Therehas also been a call for politicians to
work on legislation that will require metal
detectors at movie theaters.
+

 “The message is not terrorism. The

message is no message.”
