CE 4219 Design of Steel Structure
Because of the high strength grade of steel, this structure is reliable and requires less
raw materials than other types of structure like concrete structure and timber structure.
In modern construction, steel structure is used for almost every type of structure
including heavy industrial buildings, multi-storey buildings, equipment support
systems, infrastructure, bridges, towers, airport terminals, etc
CE 4219 Design of Steel Structure
High strength: The high ratio of strength to weight (the strength per unit weight).
Uniformity: The Properties of steel do not change appreciably with time, as do those
of a reinforced-concrete structure.
Elasticity: Behaves closer to design assumptions than most materials because it
follows hook’s law upto fairly high stresses.
Permanence: Steel frames that are properly maintained will last indefinitely.
Excellent ductility and seismic resistance: The property of a material by which it can
withstand extensive deformation without failure under high tensile stresses is its
ductility.
CE 4219 Design of Steel Structure
Disadvantages
Susceptibility to corrosion Maintenance costs / thin-walled structure
Loss of strength at elevated temperature: Fireproofing costs
Susceptibility to buckling: Slender member in compression
