It is the one that effects what it symbolizes and symbolizes what it effects. – St. Thomas Aquinas • Defined as a saving symbolic act or a visible sign, arising from the ministry of Christ and continued in, by and for the Church, which, when received in faith, fashions us into likeness to Christ in His paschal mystery, through the power of the Holy Spirit. 1. They are symbols and symbolic acts that give salvation • Symbols such as the wine and bread. • Symbolic acts of touch (anointing, laying of hands, washing), gestures (standing, bowing, kneeling), and words (proclaiming, responding, taking vows) help us see, hear, and feel God’s love. 2. It comes from the ministry of Jesus • Each sacrament celebrates a part of Jesus’ life: His baptism, maturity, leadership, table-fellowship, healing, and forgiveness of sins. • Jesus instituted the sacraments by being the first sacrament of God’s love to the world through His words and actions. 3. They are continued in and through the Church •The Church makes Jesus present to everyone through the celebrations that continue Jesus’ ministry. 4. They are celebrations of faith • Each sacrament aims to make us holier, unites us with other people in the community, and worship God in each stage of our lives. 5. It molds us into the image of God • When we receive the sacraments wholeheartedly, they form us little by little to become more like Jesus. •Through the Holy Spirit, we are transformed into Jesus’ way of thinking, acting, praying, forgiving, loving, and serving. It help us become more aware of God’s presence. •They can be actions, practices, objects, places, words, and events. In Jesus, God’s plan of salvation and reconciliation has taken place. Jesus as the great sign of God in our midst (Emmanuel – “God with us”). He is the great symbol of God’s love for us. He is the efficacious sign. Jesus’ paschal mystery speaks of the reality that sin and death have been conquered, that eternal life is visible. THE CHURCH : SACRAMENT OF JESUS • It receives the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, every Pentecost – the seventh Sunday after Easter. • The Basic or Fundamental Sacrament THE DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON THE CHURCH “by her relationship with Christ the Church is a kind of sacrament of intimate union with God and of the unity of all that is she is sign and an instrument of such union and unity” • It is a sacrament for the reason that it manifests the intimate union between God and us. • It is an “instrument” in which we can be unified. The 7 Sacraments are grouped into 3 groups • The Sacrament Of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, And Holy Eucharist. • The Sacrament Of Healing: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick • The Sacrament of Commitment/Vocation: Holy Orders and Matrimony The 7 sacrament has TWO EMPHASES STAND OUT • 1. The 7 ritual sacraments are grounded directly in both Christ (the PRIME SACRAMENT) and the Church (FUNDAMENTAL SACRAMENT). Thus, they are defined as “ACTIONS OF CHRIST AND THE CHURCH”. • 2. DRAWING THE SACRAMENTS CLOSER TO EVERYDAY LIFE especially by recognizing the essential role of the symbol in all human life. A. SACRAMENTS ARE SYMBOLS The 7 ritual sacraments are: • Particular signs that represent the actions and values of Jesus. • Reenactment and representation of what Jesus done in the past. B. CHRIST INSTITUTED THE SACRAMENTS • This expresses the essential link between the sacraments and Christ. C. SACRAMENTS GIVE GRACE
• It is a gift of God’s friendship and
love for us. 3 FUNCTIONS • The 7 SACRAMENTS: 1. Commemorate what happened in the past. 2. Demonstrate in the present that Jesus Christ lives. 3. Prefigure our glorious future with Christ at the end of time. • The SACRAMENTS help us remember our past to help us in celebrating our present life and looking forward to our future life in union with the Father in eternity.
