GAUDIUM ET SPES=The Joys and Hope
English title: The Church in the Modern World
Author: Vatican II Date: December, 1965

CONTEXT:
• The threat of the Cold War and arms race .
• Discussion of Gaudium et spes was slotted after
Belgium's Cardinal Joseph Suenens spoke up after
the first session of Vatican II asking that the council
also address issues more "external" than liturgical
change.
• First social teaching to represent opinions of the
world's bishops.
• This and other Vatican II documents initiate frequent
use of the phrases "People of God" and "signs of the
times."

IDENTIFY THE FF. TERMS
Absolute poverty

This refers to the state in which a subject lacks the


means to meet his or her basic needs.
Such basic needs usually include food, water, shelter,
basic education, and basic medical care.
Traditional Values
The values handed down from age to age in each
culture.

Family values, oftentimes referred to as familial values,


are traditional or cultural values that pertain to the
family's structure, function, roles, beliefs, attitudes, and
ideals.
Catholic Church
The Church established by Christ on the foundation of
the Apostles, possessing the fullness of the means of
salvation which he has willed: correct and complete
confession of faith, full sacramental life, and ordained
ministry in apostolic succession.
Ecumenical

Representing a number of different Christian Churches.

While...Ecumenism is a movement or tendency toward


worldwide Christian unity or cooperation. ... The term,
of recent origin, emphasizes what is viewed as the
universality of the Christian faith and unity among
churches.
Magisterium

The living, teaching office of the Church, whose task it is


to give as authentic interpretation of the word of God,
whether in its written form (Sacred Scripture), or in the
form of Tradition. It ensures the Church's fidelity to the
teaching of the Apostles in matters of faith and morals.
Council

An assembly of representatives from the whole Church


called together by the Pope to make decisions.

e.g. Second Vatican Council, also called Vatican II, (1962–


65),
The 21st ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic
Church, announced by Pope John XXIII on January 25,
1959, as a means of spiritual renewal for the church and
as an occasion for Christians separated from Rome to
join in a search for Christian unity.
Intergenerational Justice
The responsibility we have for our use of nature
and its resources reaches beyond the limits of the
generation in which we live. The effects of our
actions will be felt by those who come after us.
Authentic Human Dev’t.
This involves a search for a humanism which will enable
everyone to find themselves anew by embracing the higher
values of love and friendship, of prayer and contemplation.
This also means that all the nations of the world participate
in fair trade relationships and international cooperation.
Progress
This refers to economic and technological advances.
Common Good
This refers to the complete development of all the
people of the world. John XXIII describes it as ‘the
sum total of conditions of social living, whereby
persons are enabled more fully and readily to
achieve their own perfection.
Human Rights
These are basic rights and freedom to which all people are
entitled. In the context of Catholic Social Teaching, it is
based on the dignity of the human being – that each one is
loved and created by God and as such is of great value and
worthy of respect and protection.
Encyclical
This is a letter sent to the Bishops by the Pope to be
circulated throughout the world and are written to teach and
guide the faithful.
Distributism
This means that the ownership of the means of
production should be spread as widely as possible
among the general populace, rather than being
centralized under the control of the state, a few
large businesses or a small number of wealthy
private individuals.
"People of God"

It is a term used in the Hebrew Bible to refer to the


Israelites and used in Christianity to refer to Christians.
“signs of the times”
The Biblical expression "signs of the times" has been
used with a general meaning of significant events and
trends in many languages for centuries.

It was given a specific theological meaning at Vatican II


in the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in Today's
World: Gaudium et spes (art. 4). There it refers to those
events in history characteristic of an epoch, which, if
properly read, can reveal the presence or the absence
of God.
Industrialization
The development of industries in a country or region on
a wide scale.
Mass Communication
This refers to the imparting or exchanging of
information on a large scale to a wide range of people
via mass media such as radio,tv,internet,etc.
