Lesson 2: Types of Quantitative Research

This document discusses different types of quantitative research methods. It describes descriptive research as gathering data to answer who, what, when and how questions. Experimental research allows researchers to control variables to determine causal relationships. Survey research collects quantitative data through surveys to understand people's opinions, knowledge, and attitudes. Correlational research examines relationships between variables. Causal-comparative research seeks to identify cause-and-effect relationships similarly to experimental research but without manipulation of variables. Examples are provided for each type of quantitative research.

LESSON 2:

TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE
RESEARCH
PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2 MODULE 1
GUIDE QUESTIONS

What are the different types/kinds of quantitative

research?
What are the criteria for choosing or preferring one
particular type over another?
TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

1. DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH – designed to give

“answers to the questions of who, what, when and how
which are linked with a research problem.” It gathers
big volume of data for thorough analysis
TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

2. EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH –a type of

quantitative research that authorizes researchers to
“control the situation which allows them to answer
the question. ‘What causes something to occur?’ It
supports the ability to limit alternative explanations
and to infer direct causal relationship in the study.
TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
3. SURVEY RESEARCH – is intended to acquire
information from people concerning the
predominance, distribution, and interrelations of
variables within an identified group. In simple terms,
surveys are done to gather evidence of people’s
knowledge, opinions, attitudes, and values on various
issues and concerns. Surveys are used for collecting
data that are mainly quantitative.
TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
Step by Step Process
Started with general research issues
Research questions are formulated which may not take form
part of hypothesis
Planning of field work begin
Researcher choose which kind of population matches the
investigation of the topic well
Formulate appropriate research instrument.
TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
4. CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH – based on pairs of
measures or scores for members of a single sample
and provide an indication of the strengths of the
relationships between two variables that embody
characteristics of or performances by that group
TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
5. CAUSAL-COMPARATIVE RESEARCH – are about
providing the cause and effect relationships which
descriptive and correlational studies do not ascertain.
It may be linked with experimental research where
cause and effect relationships are generated. Causal-
comparative and correlational studies are so similar
because both are used to examine relationships
among variables.

RESEARCH students celebrate their birthdays
2. A description of how parents feel about the
K to 12 Curriculum
3. A description of the youth’s perception of
the 2016 elections
4. A description of the attitude of women’s
groups towards Rodrigo Duterte’s joke
about Australian rape victim
