Thermal power plants convert heat energy from fuels like coal into electrical energy using the Rankine cycle. They have several major components, including the coal handling plant, boiler, and steam turbine. The coal handling plant receives, processes, and stores coal before feeding it to the boiler. In the boiler, heat from burning coal is used to convert water to high-pressure steam. The steam then powers the steam turbine, which is connected to a generator to produce electricity. Though thermal plants are economical and can match power demand, they also cause pollution and require large areas for operations.

B.Tech (3rd Year) (M.E) Contents Introduction Working Principal General layout Main components Merits and demerits References Introduction A thermal power plant converts heat energy into electrical energy. It operates on the Rankine cycle. Thermal power plants constitutes 75.43% of the total power generation in India. Working Principal The thermal power plants works on the Rankine cycle. Contd. Firstly the water is taken into the boiler from the water source. The boiler is heated with the help of coal. The steam generation in the boiler is take place. The steam from the boiler is sent through a steam turbine. The turbine contain blades that rotate when high velocity steam is flow across them. The turbine is connected to the generator by a shaft which in turns give electricity as the output. This electricity is supplied to the consumers through high voltage power-lines. General Layout Main Components Coal Handling Plant In a thermal power plant, the function of CHP is to receive, process, store, feed the coal bunkers consistently over entire life of power plant. CHP consist of following process: 1. Unloading process 2. Feeding process 3. Screening process 4. Crushing process 5. Stacking process 6. Bunkering process Boiler The boiler is a control volume equipment and also known as the steam generator. The boiler generates high pressure steam by transferring the heat of combustion in various heat transfer sections. Conversion of water to steam involves three stages: 1. Heating the water from cold condition to boiling point – sensible heat addition. 2. Water boils at saturation temperature to produce steam – latent heat addition. 3. Superheating Contd. Steam Turbine The steam turbine is used to convert the heat energy of steam into the mechanical work. When high velocity steam strikes the rotating blades of turbine, K.E is developed in the blades of turbine which is converted into mechanical work. In a power plant three ( HP, IP, LP ) turbines are used. Each turbine consist of different stages as per the requirement of power plant. Steam turbines are of two types: 1. Impulse turbine 2. Reaction turbine Contd. Merits and Demerits Merits Demerits Fuel used is cheaper. Higher maintenance Smaller space is required. and operational costs. Economical in initial cost compared to hydro plants and Pollution of the atmosphere. running costs are less compared Huge requirement of water . to gas plants or diesel plants. Handling of coal and disposal Thermal plants can be placed of ash is quite difficult and near load centres. Hence transmission of power losses can requires large area. be minimized. Efficiency of thermal plant is Thermal plants are able to quite less (30-35%). respond to the load demand .
