 Exercise #1

Calculate the volume required to achieve 40% conversion on:

a A single CSTR.
b A single PFR.
c What is the maximum conversion that can be achieved in a single CSTR with a
volume of 10.5 L?
d What conversion can be achieved in a 7,2 L PFR followed by a 2,4 L CSTR?
e What would be the conversion if the previous setup is inverted?

Additional Information:
 The feed of A is 300 mol/min
 The reaction rate is related to conversion as shown bellow

 Exercise #2

An effective way to remove nitrogen oxide (NO) that comes from a combustion process is
through the reduction reaction with NH3 over a catalyst. Consider the task of analyzing the
performance of a PBR in which the reduction of NO is taking place at steady state. The
stoichiometry of the reaction is:

This process is performed at 720 K and 8.1 atm. Feed rate is 13 mol/s containing 20% NO,
25% NH3 and 55% air. The PBR is packed with spherical porous particles catalyst (Φ = 0.61
and ρC = 2.6 g/cm3). The reaction rate is given as:

The pressure drop parameter alpha (α) is α = 0.037 kg-cat-1.

a Set up a stoichiometric table for this process.
b Write all the equations to plot the variation of Ci, Fi, X and P as a function of catalyst weight.
Calculate all constant values.
 Exercise #3

The gas-phase reaction bellow is carried out in a PFR isothermally.

Consider the reaction rate is first order on A and first order on B, and the entering
volumetric flow rate is 2.5 L/min, and the feed is equimolar in A and B. The entering
temperature and pressure are 727ºC and 10 atm respectively. The specific reaction rate
at this temperature is 4 L/mol*min and the activation energy is 15000 cal/mol.

a What is the volumetric flow rate when the conversion of A is 25%?

b What is the rate of reaction at the entrance of the reactor?
c What is the rate of reaction when the conversion of A is 25%?
d What is the concentration of A entering the reactor?
e What is the concentration of A when the conversion is 40%?
f What is the value of the specific reaction rate at 1010ºC?
 Exercise #4

A liquid phase reaction was carried out isothermally in a PFR and

CSTR.

CSTR
A stream of pure A having a concentration of 1 kmol/dm3 was fed into the
CSTR (volume = 50 dm3) at a flow rate of 10 kmoles of A / min. The
conversion of A achieved was 0.5.

PFR
A diluted stream of A having a concentration of 0.5 kmol/dm3 was fed into the
PFR (volume = 50 dm3) at a flow rate of 5 kmoles of A / min. The conversion of
A achieved was 0.5;

Is it possible to find the rate law of the reaction? What is the specific rate
constant?
 Exercise #5

Pure butanol is to be fed into a semibatch reactor containing pure ethyl acetate to
produce butyl acetate and ethanol. The reaction

is elementary and reversible. The reaction is carried out isothermally at 300 K. At this
temperature the equilibrium constant is 1.08 and the specific reaction rate is L/mol * s .
Initially, there is L of ethyl Acetate in the tank and butanol is fed at a rate of 0.05 L/s.
The feed and initial concentrations of butanol and ethyl acetate are 10.93 mol/L and
7.72 mol/L, respectively.
