MATHS

ACTIVITY
Maths ! We often hear this word. There
are different parts of mathematics.
Polynomial is a very important and
interesting part of maths.
An algebraic expression with non
negative integral powers of the
variable/variables is called a
polynomial.
MONOMIAL- Polynomial having one term is known as Monomial.
Example = 4x

BINOMIAL- Polynomial having two terms is known as Binomial.

Example = 4x + 7

TRINOMIAL- Polynomial having only three terms is known as Trinomial.

Example = 4x +7 + 3x

LINEAR POLYNOMIAL- A Polynomial of degree 1 is called a linear polynomial.

Example = 2x – 1

QUADRATIC POLYNOMIAL- A Polynomial of degree 2 is called a Quadratic

polynomial. Example =2x2+4

CUBIC POLYNOMIAL -A Polynomial of degree 3 is called a Cubic Polynomial.

Example = 3x3+2x+1
If p(x) is a polynomial of degree greater than or equal to one and a
is any real number then
i) (x-a) is a factor of p(x), if p(a) = 0
ii) p(a) = 0, if (x – a ) is a factor of p(x)

Eg (i) x3-2x2-x+2
P(x) = x3-2x2-x+2 . . . x +1=0
P(-1)=(-1)3-2(-1)2-x+2 =>x=-1
= -1-2+1+2
= -3+3
=0
(x+1) isa factor of the polynomial p(x)
x+1 ) x3-2x2-x+2 ( x2-3x+2
x3+x2
-3x2-x+2
-3x2-3x
2x+2
2x+2
0

=(x+1) (x2-3x+2)
= (x+1) {x2-x(2+1)=2}
= (x+1) {x2-2x-x+2}
=(x+1) {x(x-2)-1(x-2)}
= (x+1) (x-2) (x-1)
If a polynomial p(x) of degree greater than or equal to
one is divided by (x-a), then the remainder is p(a).

Eg : The value of k, if (x-1)is a factor of p(x)

P(x)= 2x2+kx+ √2 x-1 = 0
P(1)= 2(1)2+k(1)+ √2 =>x=1
= 2+k+ √2
P(1) = 0
=> 2+k+ √2 =0
=> 2+k = - √2
=> k = -(2+ √2 )
SOLVED QUESTIONS
1) x2+1/x2-2x-2/x+2
= [x2+1/x2+2]-[2x+2/x]
= [x2+1/x2+2]-2[x+1/x]
= [x+1/x]2-2[x+1/x]
= [(x+1/x) (x+1/x)]-[2(x+1/x)]
= (x+1/x) [(x+1/x)-2]

2) Volume : 12ky2+8ky-20k
=4[3ky2+2ky-5k]
=4[k(3y2+2y-5)]
=4xkx(3y2+2y-5) Splitting the middle term
=4k[3y2-3y+5y-5]
=4k[3y(y-1)+5(y-1)]
=4k(3y+5)(y-1)
Thus, the possible dimensions are 4k,(3y+5),(y-1) units.
3) 9983
= (1000-2)3
=(1000)3-(2)3-3(1000)(2)[1000-2]
= 1000000000-8-1000[1000-2]
= 1000000000-8-1000000-12000
=994011992

UNSOLVED QUESTIONS

2)Factorise (x6-y6)
3) If a+b+c = 5 and ab+bc+ca = 10, then prove that a3+b3+c3-
3abc = -25
