PROBLEM DEFINITION

 Growth of the population is increasing day by day. To meet the requirements of the
population, high rise buildings are very much needed.
 The behavior of a regular structure to earthquake forces are predictable. The behavior
of an irregular structure to earthquake forces are unpredictable because of mass
irregularity, torsion irregularity, weak storey, diaphragm discontinuity etc.
 A building is certified to be stable during its design process by checking the entire
structure for both vertical and horizontal irregularities which is mentioned according
to various international codes.
 The ill effects of irregularities are mainly experienced when a structure is subjected to
earthquake which leads to considerable damage and even the collapse of the
structure.
Types of irregularities

HORIZONTAL VERTICAL
IRREGULARITIES IRREGULARITIES

 Torsional Irregularity  Stiffness Irregularity

 Re-entrant corner Irregularity  Mass Irregularity

 Diaphragm Discontinuity Irregularity  Strength Irregularity

 Non Parallel System Irregularity  Vertical Geometric Irregularity

LITERATURE SURVEY

Study on Torsional Effects of Irregular Buildings Under

Seismic Loads – mr.Shaik Muneer Hussain , Dr. Sunil Kumar
 The objective of this work is aimed at understanding the torsional behavior of
asymmetric buildings by modeling and analyzing a 14 storey buildings using three
dimensional dynamic analysis (Response Spectrum Method) procedure with ETABS as
per the IS Code 1893:2002 (I).
 After analysis results were presented in tabular form and graphs were plotted.
 Conclusion : Buildings with irregular plan configurations causes severe damage than
the regular building during earthquake in high seismic zones are caused due to
increase in the drifts and displacements

Effect of Plan Irregularity on RC Buildings due to

BNBC-2006 Earthquake Load –Mr.M.Z. Habib, M.A.
Alam, Mr.M.M. Islam.
 In the current study six buildings of different shape has been chosen and analysed by
imposing seismic loads using finite element software (ETABS v 9.7.4). The shapes of
the buildings are rectangular, square, Inverted L, T, U and L. Each of the building has
G+6 number of storey and located at seismic zone-I of BNBC 2006.
 After analysis results were presented in tabular form and graphs were plotted.
 Conclusion : Storey drift and storey displacement are more in rectangular shape
buildings/structures.

OBJECTIVES

 To determine optimum position of shear walls by taking

irregular building plan.
 To determine the structural response under wind and seismic
loading using shear walls with the same cross sectional area in
different models
 To find parameters like storey displacements, base shear, and
relative storey drifts.
 To study the structural response for irregularities.
METHODOLOGY

 LITERATURE STUDY (SEARCHING CODES, METHODS AND TECHNIQUES).

 DEFINING OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY.
 FLOOR PLAN GENERATION USING AutoCAD.
 MODEL GENERATION USING ETABS.
 APPLYING LOADS AND SEISMIC PARAMETERS AS ASSUMED.
 ANALYSIS OF BUILDING MODELS TO OBTAIN THE RESULTS.
 COMPARISION OF THE RESULTS AND CONCLUDING THE WORK WITH
CONCLUSIONS.
