RELIGION
• Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief system, and
the world views that establishes symbols that relate
humanity to spirituality and to moral values.

THE MOST KNOWN RELIGIONS ACROSS THE WORLD ARE:

• CHRISTIANITY with 2.2 Billion adherents. Jesus as its deity.
( Holy Bible )
• ISLAM with1.57 milliard adherents. The God is Allah. ( Quran )
• HINDUISM with 811 million adherents. Many Gods.
GLOBALIZATION AND RELIGION GLOBALIZATION

• As the world grows more modern, religions continue to evolve.

Since the beginning of religion, people have been trying to spread
the word of their deity to any agnostic community.

• Take Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam, for example – they were

able to expand so extensively and effectively because they relied
heavily on the services of missionaries, as well as the work of pilgrims
and Diasporas.
Religion epitomizes the definition
of globalization due to the fact that it
can be spread more efficiently than
ever before through the use of
different technological tools.

Tools of uniting people all over

the world on religious beliefs:

- Books - Charity Fund

- Movies - Special Internet
- Social Networks Sites
- Mobile Apps - Religious Schools
Religion has entered the “information age” and has
globalized at acceleration rates, in the methods religions use
for teaching and in belief systems.

It is now possible for any religion

to spread beyond national
borders, allowing even small new
religious movements to engage
in overseas activities and leading
to new unseen religious
development.
SECULARIZATION IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION

• Secularization Theory is placed in relationship both of the

religion of reason of the enlightenment and development in
European historiography during the 19th Century.

• With Secularization, religious beliefs cannot compete with

the intellectual credibility of both natural and social
science. Religious beliefs are made relative to one’s private
belief.
• SECULARIZATION is the process by which the society is slowly
transforming from that having close identification with the
religious institution to a more separated relationship.

• SECULARISM began in 1861 when the parishes of Mindanao

originally managed by the Recollect friars were handed to
the Jesuits. The Jesuits were expelled from the Philippines in
1768 because of the conflict between the European
leaders.
PENTECOSTALISM

The term Pentecostal is derived from pentecost. (Greek name for the
Jewish Feast of Weeks.)

THE RISE OF RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM

• Religious fundamentalism has risen to worldwide prominence

since the 1970’s.
3 MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF RELIGION
By Emile Durkheim

1. Provides social cohesion to help maintain social solidarity

through shared rituals and beliefs.

2. Social control to enforce religious based morals and norms

to help maintain conformity and help the society.

3. Offers meaning and purpose to offer answer to any

existential questions.
IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON RELIGION

• Religion and globalization have always shared a relation of

struggle and conflict. Globalization has generally been
linked with economic and political interdependence which
ultimately has brought people closer and effect of no event
is isolated but is felt in far off places too.
