Design of A. C. Machine

The stator of a 3-phase induction motor consists of a stator frame, stator core, and stator winding. The stator frame provides mechanical strength and protection. The stator core, made of laminated silicon steel to reduce losses, carries the alternating flux. The stator winding, which can be connected in star or delta, produces a rotating magnetic field when excited by 3-phase AC power. Single layer winding is used for small motors and double layer for medium motors.

“Stator Design of 3 - Phase Induction Motor”
Stator of 3 - Phase Induction
Motor
 The stator of the three phase induction motor consists of
three main parts :

 Stator frame

 Stator core

 Stator winding or field winding.

Stator Frame
 It is the outer most part of the three phase induction
motor. Its main function is to support the stator core
and the field winding.

 It acts as a covering and it provide protection and

mechanical strength to all the inner parts of the
induction motor. It is either made up of die cast or
fabricated steel.

 The frame of three phase induction motor should be

very strong and rigid as the air gap length of three
phase induction motor is very small, otherwise rotor
will not remain concentric with stator, which will give
rise to unbalanced magnetic pull.
Stator Core
 The main function of the stator core is to carry the
alternating flux. In order to reduce the eddy
current loss, the stator core is laminated. These
laminated types of structure are made up of
stamping which is about 0.4 to 0.5 mm thick.

 All the stamping are stamped together to form stator

core, which is then housed in stator frame. The
stamping is generally made up of silicon steel,
which helps to reduce the hysteresis loss occurring
in motor.
Stator Winding or Field
Winding
 The slots on the periphery of stator core of the three phase induction
motor carries three phase windings.

 The three phases of the winding are connected either in star or delta
depending upon which type of starting method is used.

 The squirrel cage motor is mostly started by star – delta starter and
hence the stator of squirrel cage motor is delta connected.
Stator Winding or Field
Winding
 The slip ring three phase induction motor are started by
inserting resistances so, the stator winding of slip ring induction
motor can be connected either in star or delta.

 The winding wound on the stator of three phase induction motor is

also called field winding and when this winding is excited by three
phase ac supply it produces a rotating magnetic field.
Types Of Stator Winding

 Two types of winding are generally used for stator

of three phase induction motors
 Single layer winding

 Double layer winding

Single Layer Winding

 Single layer mush winding is used for

small motors with small numbers of slots.
It is housed in semi closed slots.

 In this type of winding, the complete slot is

containing only one coil side of a coil. This
type of winding is not normally used for
machines having commutators.
 In single layer windings permit the use of semi enclosed
and closed types of slots.

 Also the coils can be pushed through the slots from one
end of the core and are connected during the process of
windings at the other end.

 Here the insulation can be properly applied and

consolidated which is advantageous in large output
machines with high voltage.
Double Layer Winding
 Double layer (either lap or wave
winding) winding with diamond shape
coils is used for medium sized
motors. It is housed in open slots.

 It consists of identical coils with one

coil side of each coil in top half of the
slot and the other coil side in bottom
half of another slot which is nearly
one pole pitch away.
