Importance of Officiating

Without officiating we can’t organize

matches or tournaments.

They are the keepers of the rules and

masters of their domain.

They provide leadership and guidance to

participants.

They ensure that competition is a safe &

fair manner.
Officiating Badminton
Definition of Terms

 Match – a basic contest in badminton between

opposing sides each of one or two players. It
consists of best of three games.

 Singles – a match where there is one player on

each of the opposing sides.

 Doubles – a match where there are two players

on each of the opposing sides.

 Serving Side – the side having the right to serve

Definition of Terms

 Receiving Side – the side opposing the serving

side.

 Rally – a sequence of one or more strokes

starting with the service, until the service is
delivered.

 Stroke – a forward movement of the player’s

racket.

Scoring System
 A match shall consist of the best of three games
 Game shall won by the side which first scores 21 points.
 The side winning a rally shall add point to its
score.
 If the score becomes 20-all, the side which
gains a two point lead first, shall win the
game.
 If the scores become 29-all, the side scoring the 30th
point shall win that game.
 The side winning a game shall serve first in the next
game.
Change of Ends

At the end of the first game.

At the end of the second game (if there is
to be a third game
In the third game when a side firsts 11
points.

if no change ends occurred, it shall be

done as soon as the mistake is discovered &
when the shuttle is not in play.
Correct Service
Neither side shall cause undue delay to
the delivery of the service once the server
& the receiver are ready to serve.
The server & the receiver shall stand
within diagonally opposite service courts
without touching the boundary lines.
Some part of both feet of the server &
receiver shall remain in contact with
surface of the court in a stationary position
from the start of the service until the
service is delivered.
Correct Service
The server’s racket shall initially hit the
base of the shuttle.
The whole shuttle shall be below the
server’s waist at the moment of being
struck.
One the players are ready for the service,
the first forward movement of the server’s
racket head shall be the start of the
service.
Correct Service
Once started, the service is delivered
when the shuttle is hit by the server’s
racket.
The server shall not serve before the
receiver is ready. However, the receiver
shall be considered to have been ready if
a return of the service is attempted.
Faults
It is fault if:
 Incorrect service
 If in service, the shuttle
*is caught on the net & remains suspended
on its top.
*is caught after passing over the net
*hit by the receiver’s partner.
Faults
If in play, the shuttle:
- lands outside the boundary line
- passes through or under the net
- fails to pass over the net
- touches the ceiling or side walls
- touches the player
- touches any other object or person outside
the court
Faults
If in play, the shuttle:
- is caught & held on the racket & then slung
during the execution of a stroke.
- is hit twice in succession by the same
player.
- is hit by a player & then player’s partner
successively.
- touches a player’s racket & does not travel
towards the opponent’s court.
Faults
If in play, a player:
- touches the net or its supports with racket,
person or dress.
- invades an opponent’s court.
- obstructs an opponent.
- deliberately distracts an opponent by an
action.
Let – is called to halt the play
 If the server serves before the receiver is ready.
 If during service, the server & the receiver are both
faulted.
 After the service is returned, the shuttle is caught on the
net & remains suspended on its top, or after passing
over the net is caught in the net.
 If during play, the shuttle disintegrates & the base
completely separates from the base of the shuttle.
 If the judge is unsighted & the umpire is unable to make
a decision.
 Any unforeseen or accidental situation has occurred.
When a “let” occurs, since the last service shall
not count & the player who served last shall serve again.
Shuttle not in Play
 It strikes the net or post to fall toward the surface
of the court on the striker’s side of the net.
 It hits the surface of the court.
 A “Fault” or “let” has occurred.
Intervals
 Not succeeding 60 seconds during each game
when the leading score reaches 11 points.
 Not exceeding 120 seconds between the first
and second game, and between the first and
second game, and between the second and
third game.
During the Match
The Umpire shall
 Use the standard vocabulary
 Concentrate on the match
 Record and call the score
 During the service, if SJ is appointed, watch the
receiver
 Keep aware of the status of any scoring device
 Raise the right hand above the umpire’s head (if needed)
 Give decision on lines
 Line judge is unsighted
 No line judge
 Call “service over” followed by the score in favor of the
new serving side, when a side losses a rally & thereby
the right to continue serving
During the Match
The Umpire shall
 Follow flight of shuttle
 Call receiver’s fault
 Call “Play”
- To indicate the start of the match
- After interval
- To resume the game during suspension
 Call faults and lets loud and clear
 Prevent undue delay
 Change of shuttle
 Watch out for a possibility of injury
 Suspension of play
 Make use of stopwatch
 Announce the intervals
 Announce the end of match
Administration of Breach
The umpire shall administer any breach of Law
 Issuing a warning to the offending side
 Faulting the offending side, if previously warned

in case of persistent offense, the umpire shall fault

the offending side and report it to the Referee immediately
who shall have the power to disqualify.
Line Calls
 If the opinion of the umpire, it is beyond reasonable
doubt, a line judge has clearly made a wrong call, the
umpire shall call
- “Correction, IN” (if the shuttle has landed “in”)
- “Correction, OUT” (if the shuttle has landed “out”)
 In the absence of the line judge is unsighted, the umpire
shall call;
- “OUT” before calling the score when the shuttle
lands outside the line, or
- “LET” when the umpire is unsighted

Service Judge

Call of Service Judge
 At the instant of hitting the shuttle, the shaft of the racket
is not pointing in a downward direction.
 Whole of the shuttle is not below of the server’s waist at
the moment of being struck
 Neither side shall cause undue delay to the delivery of
the service once the server and receiver are ready for
the service.
 Some of both feet not in the service court and in a
stationary position until the service is delivered.
 Initial point of contact with the shuttle not on the base of
the shuttle.
