    Plaza Cuartel is a national heritage site and former Spanish garrison located near the wharf in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. It now serves as a city park but has a dark history from World War II. On December 14, 1944, Japanese soldiers burned approximately 150 American prisoners of war alive in the park's tunnel as the war was ending. Only 11 prisoners survived. A memorial marker and monument created by a survivor honor those who died. Despite its tragic past, the park is now a peaceful place for rest and leisure.

    CUARTEL
    PUERTO PRINSESA CITY, PALAWAN
    -is where the Plaza Cuartel is located.
    -it is near the wharf of the City so one can get a
    good view of the blue ocean. At the present;it is
    now a part of the town Plaza Complex.
    -It is easy by going to the opposite side of
    Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral, the city main
    Cathedral.
    -This is a good spot to take a rest and just enjoy
    the beauty of nature by looking out the blue sea
    of PALAWAN.

    *The Plaza also has a lot of tales to tell. It has a


    colourful history because of the events that
    happened here during the WORLD WAR II (WWII)

    Japanese soldiers burn around 150 American Prisoners Of War (POW) in the tunnel
    beneath the Park’s portal, which now stands as a grim reminder of World War II
    atrocities.
    Tragic event happened when
    the WORLD WAR II has about
    to end.
     PLAZA CUARTEL is a garrison of the
    Spaniards overtook by the Americans and
    then by Japanese. When the Japanese
    soldiers realized that they were losing war.
    They put all the prisoners in the dungeon,
    poured out drums of petroleum over them
    and light them up alive. The ELEVEN
    SURVIORS who escaped narrated the story.
    TUNNEL WHERE WORLD WAR II PRISONERS
    WERE BURNED ALIVE….
    Only 11 prisoners survived sacrifice that our warriors suffered to preserve our freedom.

    The remains of those who
    died were buried at St. Louis
    country, Jefferson Barrack,
    National Cemetery, Missouri
    USA in 1952.
    In addition to the memorial marker, there
    was the Palawan massacre monument. The
    monument was created by Don Schloat, a
    World War II veteran and was one of the
    survivors in Plaza Cuartel.
    After the World War the Americans took control of the
    place once again until it was passed on the constabulary ,
    later on. It was given to the National Police. In 1997, it was
    renovated and become leisure park.
    PLAZA CUARTEL LOOKS LIKE YOUR ORDINARY CITY PARK WITH
    CONCRETE PAVEMENTS, TOWERING TREES AND BENCHES. YET
    DARKNESS STORY UNDERLINES WITHIN THE BEAUTY OF IT.
    Can you imagine that once there was a grievance scenario
    happened in this place? The park is perfect for dating!
    The Dark Past is now a Light Leisure Park,
    ENTRANCE is FREE!!!
